Re: The Turn Back to the Airport after engine Failure
This is not exactly on topic but this week we had a DC3 (actually aN R4D-8) depart Anchorage International which lost the right engine on takeoff. While commencing an emergency left hand turn back to ANC, the pilot determined that he could not maintain altitude and elected to make a right turn to li...

Re: The Turn Back to the Airport after engine Failure
Regarding George’s comments on turns back to the runway, I have comments regarding the practice from having done many myself in gliders and having trained many student glider pilots in the maneuver. A rope break on departure is a common abnormal launch procedure and applicants are typically required...

Re: Cotter pin in oil pan
My guess is that’s it’s a link off the chain to the oil cap. That might be the luckiest and most benign explanation.

Re: Canada -US Border state Sept 2021
There is confusion on what the real story is. I just spoke to US Customs and Border Patrol at Northway, AK (2:20pm ADT 9/21/2021 and was told that the border is open for Canadian pilots arriving from Canada at Northway. No Covid testing or proof of vaccination, just the normal process of 1) filing w...

Re: Fuel quantity: level flight vs 3 point ground stance
Keith,
I understood your question but I don’t know the answer off the top of my head. I have the original gauges which are marked in quarters of a tank, not gallons, and aren’t that accurate anyway.

Re: Fuel quantity: level flight vs 3 point ground stance
I have no idea about the tank capacity but the TCDS says the following about leveling. Specifications Pertinent to All Models… Datum Leveling Means Certification Basis: Front face of firewall Upper door sill I don’t see why you couldn’t level the airplane with empty tanks per above and then add gas ...

Re: Best Glide
Glide ratio.jpg Vertical speed by itself does not tell us anything about glide ratio but if you divide your horizontal airspeed by your vertical descent rate in mph, you can quickly calculate your approximate glide ratio. Go fly your 170 at 60, 70, 80, and 90 mph and write down your vertical sink r...

Throttle repair question
7F68E6ED-8C3C-4570-9507-2CB68D2A5204.jpeg My throttle is slipping so I unscrewed the friction lock and discovered that the nylon wedge washer is cracked. When I tighten the lock, the nylon washer simply distorts and slips. When I tried to figure out who could supply a replacement I was totally skun...

Re: Proper Tailwheel Steering Springs?
Your mechanic is correct, you do have the wrong springs. Your present springs are known as compression springs and have limited travel.
Worse, those springs can damage your control system as the springs bottom out quickly and transmit too much force to other parts of the rudder control system.

I have a 172 cowl (I think 1959.) You can see its different from the 170 and mine appears to be of heavier gauge metal.

Re: Continental Mags: Are they junk?
George,
I do not know if the inspector filed a report. I have been in contact with Continental myself and they have been directed to file a warranty claim for my cost of inspection ($315.00). They also acknowledge that they have a quality control problem that they are addressing internally.

Re: Continental Mags: Are they junk?
I got my new mags from Continental (Bendix mags overhauled by Continental to new specs). At the advice of my IA, I had them inspected by the local engine shop, Alaskan Aircraft Engines, prior to installation. Good thing I did. One mag had an extra o-ring floating around loose in the case. Inspecting...
