Re: What tailwheel is this?

Be careful flying that airplane after properly cleaning that tail wheel. Your center of gravity may well have changed.

Re: 4 tanks in a 1948 170 ragwing

Like I said, Why hasn't your C-170 ALWAYS had four tanks? Is there anything in your log book that says it only has three tanks? I would think that this airplane has had four tanks for the last sixty eight years. How old are you? It, and that fourth tank, may well be older than your daddy! One should...

Re: Air bubble of doom in gascolator!

In viEw of the fact that the only thing to cause the filling of the gascolator is the head pressure from the tanks, and the fall distance being maybe only about three feet, I would guess the pressure to be only a few ounces. If your gascolator is getting air in it, I would guess that something is re...

Re: 4 tanks in a 1948 170 ragwing

I think that if I had a C-170, and in the event that anyone asked, it would have ALWAYS had a fourth tank ever since I had it.

Re: 4 tanks in a 1948 170 ragwing

In my considered opinion (I don't have any humble opinions left) the only way to really determine the useable fuel amount is to fly the airplane on one tamk, with the skid ball centered, until the engine quits, then note the amount required to top it up again. If you're real serious about this, on a...

Re: Lycoming O-340

I think one of the main problems with the conversion to the Lycoming O-340 engine was the cost versus the small horsepower increase. You might be able to find a cheaper engine but the conversion cost would be she same as for an O-360 without the limiting propeller problem.

Re: Heavy duty steering arm

The principal steering problem when taxiing the C-170 is the pressure result from the angle of dangle on the steering chains between the rudder horn and the tail wheel steering arm. It stinks. The last of the 1955 C-170s with the steering chains coming out of the lower rear part of the fuselage, as ...

Re: Prop RPM Avoid Range Operation

I don't see why your airplane can't be flown at 2400 rpm on an ILS approach. I had to borrow a friends C-170 for a "FUZZ ride" one time, It had a Lycoming and a Hartzel and I just left it set at 2400 for the whole ride. The FUZZer was somewhat upset and wanted to know why I didn't adjust m...

With an inertia reel on your shoulder harness you wouldn't need that handle.

Re: EAA, Dynon announce STC for Cessna, Piper aircraft

Now, if we could just find a way to get rid of those old "Magnetos" that are left over from World War One, their resultant ignition harnesses, and twenty five to fifty dollar spark plugs, - - - - -? After all, multi millions of automobiles did away with that type of ignition systems and we...

Re: EAA, Dynon announce STC for Cessna, Piper aircraft

It would appear to me that if this system is approved for installation in the Cessna 172, It should not take a lot of effort to get an approval for the C-170. I suspect that the relative obscurity of the C-170, due to its age, and the number of active models in comparison with the C-172, is probably...
