Don't feel too bad, after my B&C starter conversion I have now picked up a rather bad generator seal leak. I clean the floor each night but the next day there is a puddle of oil like you would expect from a radial. I can look up under the generator and see the oil drip hanging from the internal ...

Now that Oshkosh is over, I have time to sit down and write. The B&C starter conversion was a resounding success. When I dropped the crankcase cover away from the engine, the gasket stayed on the engine so that it formed a buffer against stray hacksaw strokes. I used just a hacksaw blade on the ...

Received my B&C starter yesterday. I had to open the box to see if anything was in there besides the peanuts...it was soooo light. I got the very last starter they had for O-300 engine. Demand has caught them off guard and no more will be available for a few weeks. I have all the accessories off...

Seeing the numerous references to "generator light" I just have to ask about it. I have no such light in my 1954 170B, nor any location that I can see where one was put. Is the gen warning light a modification to bring your eyes over to the amp meter :?

Gasket Compound

I thought it time to touch off another round of spirited conversation! Coming from the auto world, I am used to applying a thin coating of gasket compound to all gaskets with the exception of cylinder head gaskets. I find it comforting to see the slight ooozzz of compound from the sealing joint to i...

I just finished looking....twice...in the two page specifications section at the front of the TCM overhaul manual and there are no fastener torque specs given  Seems to me I saw a table of "general" torque values based upon fastener grade, size and thread pitch somewhere. Perhaps this...

I have been wobbling back and for on the modify or not modify starter issue. Yes the old DR starter is more economical in terms of cost, but is more tempermental and requires more routine service than the B&C unit. The B&C is indeed a big hassle to install, but then it is done and all the ad...

The Haynes Manuals I referred to are for the automotive field. Just as the automotive field is light years ahead of GA as far as engines go, so their manuals are much more detailed so as to make sure even the first timer is in a good position to do the work. For one thing, I see no fastener torque s...

Thanks for the detail Miles :D Makes me feel a bit better about diving in and taking the case off. The TCM overhaul manual is really skimpy about a lot of details on the engine or maybe I'm just used to good Haynes manuals with really detailed step instructions along with many nice detailed photos. ...

Time to revive this thread  Referencing my comments in the "C-145 Starter" thread, I've decided to go with a B&C unit. I had hoped to find a direct replacement lightweight starter from Lamar, but they did not have one for the O-300A and it took three people to determine that they...

Good Morning guys and thanks for the feedback! My inbox is empty on this site George, but I'll get to my email on the next cup of coffee :) I usually like to have a printed book so that I can store it on the bookshelf in the hangar and be able to sit down and read without messing with a computer...b...

I always thought that the generator would retain a residual voltage while the battery was removed for maintenance or charging and be ready to go again when the battery was reinstalled. That is supposed to be the strong point when you completely kill your battery by leaving the master on....you can h...

I've got one sitting here waiting to be installed. I think mine came from Aircraft Spruce, but can't remember. It is an Ohmite RSH8R0 rated at 1.767 amps with a resistance of 8 ohms. I think the wattage rating is 25 watts. I know there is a formula out there to find the wattage rating based upon the...

I've apparently got a big problem with my starter and could use a bit of advise. Went on a short flight today and heard a crackling in the intercom, then saw the LORAN go off and come back on along with the rest of the avionics, then saw the ampmeter needle doing a dance. Then things quickly calmed ...
