Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
In May of 1971, I flew to Oklahoma City, bought a 1952 170B for $5000, flew it to Wichhita, KS., had an Avcon /Lyc. 0-360 with C/S Hartzell installed with STC, in 12 days for an additional $5500. Returned to Anchorage in 3 days and 27.5 hrs. N2567D is still here in Anchorage and has been owned by th...

Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
Trying to make a 170 into a 180/182/185/206 using gadgets is a poor way to accomplish what the factory did very well, will be excessively expensive, and will still fall short. Spending a lot of money trying to make a C-170 into a bigger airplane is a losing proposition. It would be nice to stay on t...

Re: oldest 170 pilot ?
Didn't see any ages posted, but I doubt any one is older, and flown 170's longer and still flying his own Cessna 170B. That would be Oren Hudson at 94, living in Anchorage, AK. He started flying 170's in the early 50's. He also has over 11,000 hours in is Widgeon. Recently he was one of 13 that were...

Re: Hartzell 80 inch prop for 180 Lyc
If the inside of the wings and fuselage are green (zinc chromated) then it probably is a factory built float kit.

Re: Landing technique
In the 1972, I met a Kansas Cessna 170 owner, former Cessna employee, who gave me that same instruction on a normal spring Kansas windy day. We did wheel landings with all flap configuration (0-40), including cross winds, somewhere north of Wichita. The set up on the down wind, as he said, "whe...

Re: Hartzell 80 inch prop for 180 Lyc
A good choice. I have a Yellow tag extra counter balance, you will need the STC from Hartzell and a set of blades, at your overhaul shop they will exchange your blades, over haul your hub and with a counter balance, put it all together and you should be set. Also no RPM restriction.

Re: Comment period on medical exemption for ALL pilots
Comment period extended to Sept 14, 2012: More than 14,000 pilots told the FAA their views on a request that would ease the burden of the third class medical. Now, those who missed the July 2 deadline will have a fresh chance to voice their support. The first comment period ended July 2 for a reques...

Re: Stabalizer boots/ kits
Here is a note from and Idaho back country pilot. That's what it comes down to. Wheel pants don't even "look good" on a plane that's going in & out of surfaces other than asphalt (let alone bush or off field sites) because of all the potential for problems. Lot's of wheel pants get dam...

Re: new starter
Installed a Sky-Tec 10 years ago, and recently put one on our 160 cub. You lose 7 pounds of weight in the exchange and have quicker starts. Would never go back. Conversion is as easy as A B C.

Re: Federal Skii Prices
"As I remember the original Federals had a convex bottom. This would need to be changed out to a flat bottom prior to plastic installation." You can't make the Federals flat. The UHMW goes over the bottom as is, the metal strip on the bottom comes off and changed to a UHMW strip as a hold...

Re: Fuel Tank Vent - necessary???
The rest of the story::: From Cessna History while building the 1952 Cessna 180..the following is from the first Cessna's 180 project pilot William D. Thompson in 1952. In accordance with standard practice at the time (prior to 1952), the forward-facing fuel vent tube was mounted on the top surface ...

Re: V-Brace install help
Add ski operations as a major reason for the "V" to reduce the lateral twisting, while taxiing on skis. You get lots the windshield movement without the "V" brace.

A good WW 2 Clip with an interesting ending
This is pretty good – pack a lunch [it takes about 10 minutes] but worthy. Great dog fighting scenes. The ending was a surprise.
