Rigging

I have noticed that while in level cruise flight, my elevators are deflected nose down - significantly. Enough that the "leading edge" (the outboard portion at the front) of the elevator is probably 3/4-1" up. Can rigging be done without wrecking the fabric on a '48? My covering is on...

Hmmm ... now I better defer to the experts. I am pretty sure that a certified plane must have certified parts (PMA / TSO / etc.) but I don't know all the specifics. There are certain situations where you can have owner manufactured parts that are signed off ... I'm sure there are others who can expa...

Can the oil pump system even generate enough pressure / suction to collapse one of those things?
The metal is fairly thick, and in a cylindrical shape they're pretty strong ... I would think that the gasket or something else would give before the thing would collapse...

PMA is parts manufacturer approval: http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/air_cert/design_approvals/pma/ TSO is technical standard order: http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/air_cert/design_approvals/tso/ I'm looking forward to following along with your project ... once the RV-8 is done I'd like to find an old classi...

Mine does a similar thing. In flight, if both is selected, it will drain the L tank to nearly empty before burning off the R tank(s). I think it is siphoning across, as when totally full in flight it will overflow the R tank(s). I usually switch to R shortly after takeoff and burn 1/2 or so of the f...

Nice pics! I only have 100hr or so in the 170, but I was taught (and much prefer) 3 pointers in all situations. The way my CFI explained it just makes sense ... if you touch down 3 point, full stall, then the plane is done flying, the tailwheel is down, and you have good control. I have found wheeli...

more FAA funding issues....

Sent to me by my dad, who is not a pilot and only involved in GA through me: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070415/ap_on_bi_ge/ticket_taxes We've got a fight ahead. This is the stuff being disseminated to the public by the press. Make sure to call / write / email your reps in congress and the senate! ...

Ditto on all the above. I have been waiting lots longer than before, and the briefers are different; from Indy I always talked with Terre Haute; now I get Dayton or Kankakee (not that it makes a huge difference here in the midwest). The briefers seem less sure of themselves, and are reluctant to giv...

The other thing about liability coverage (in this day and age) is that it buys you the legal defense resources of your carrier. Sometimes you may not really be liable, but the cost to defend yourself ain't cheap either. An insurance company that stands to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars can pr...

Ouch! So what made you decide to overhaul? How was it running? Did you have any idea there was a problem? A guy a few hangars down from me has a straight tail 172 and he has some of the pistons that were taken out when he overhauled it ... a couple are unbelievably damaged, with bent rings and defor...

Unwanted brake activation

In my 170 when I press more than 1/2 or so of R rudder I get braking on the right. It is a little bit of a pain, the other day while taking off in a x-wind I could feel the plane decelerate when I used R rudder. Not to mention I think it could be a little dangerous. I crawled under there and looked ...

Very important stuff ... just drafted some letters a few minutes ago. Things I have read on other forums and web sites highly suggest getting a paper copy to the rep - it takes a little more effort to "ignore" it (compared with deleting an email). According to some, a fax may be better the...

Interesting comparison ... my other plane is a '97 172R. :) I use it for travel and see fuel burns of about 9gph on average, maybe a little less. Very comfortable airplane. The main downside to the injected engine is that it can really be a bear to start when hot. Several times I've had to wait afte...

Some do this and some don't - it depends on the fuel injection system. The FI on my lycoming 172 does not have any return lines nor a header tank...

Same with the experimental engines ... I plumbed return lines to the tanks on the -8 in case the FI system I choose needs return lines.
