Annual question - ragwing fuel pump

There appears to be a leak from the top of the fuel pump. Is there a gasket set available to replace the gaskets in the fuel pump? It looks like the pump is part #40585; should I just buy a new one (overhauled?) from Spruce or is it worth the time to disassemble and try and fix the leak? Thanks Thomas

Annual questions - fuel selector

Well, the much feared fuel selector is leaking - found it during this annual. I have reviewed all the stuff in the archives but cannot find a definite answer. Is the weatherhead valve an OK replacement for the ragwing? Has anyone successfully used it? If not, is it even possible to disassemble and r...

Count me in!
I can probably scare up a few more friends, tailwheel drivers but not 170s (C-140, RV6, etc)

Yeah - the calendar was sitting on my desk and I mistook it for the magazine!
Guess I don't need to post the cover pic any more!

I frequently put in plugs for the association when people have 170 related questions on the CPA forums ... not sure if it helps or not. I wonder if the CPA would omit mention of another association in their magazine? I have the magazine and will try and post the pic; the owners names are mentioned b...

On the cover

This month's Cessna Pilot's Association mag has 2 C-170's in flight on the cover!
Nice looking airplanes ... hope those guys are members over here :)

I remove the duct tape after each flight, and set aside the square piece (usually 3 strips) - sometimes it is still sticky enough to re use on the next flight.
If you forget and leave that stuff on it is a real mess to remove!

Ditto for me on the slips in the 170 (I have a ragwing). You can really crank it over and come down fast on final. Who needs bigger flaps ?! :D All classic taildraggers are great. If you think you want a 170, another reason to start there is that you can avoid paying sales / use tax (depending on yo...

So are the gigantic fuel caps intended to be airtight and seal the tank? I am not sure how the system works. On the RV the caps are airtight and the tank is vented via separate vents. Is this the case on the 170 as well (vent via the vent above the cabin?) If they are intended to be airtight then we...

Uneven fuel flow / overflow

I filled the 170 last night and flew back home, about 30 minutes. When I pulled it back into the hangar, I noticed fuel stains on the top of the right horizontal stabilizer. Looking closer, the top of the R wing was wet, and there was a puddle in the top of the R fuel cap. Fuel had been spilling (si...

Here is my completely unscientific opinion... I own a '48 170 and a 1997 172R (basically the same airplane as the S model, minus a different prop / tach / etc.). My impression and "feel" is that the 170 is far more responsive and lighter on the controls than the skyhawk. A lot of the time ...

Yeah, that's what I wondered. But all that directional control stuff is tougher when you are not looking down the center line of the airplane!
