"Why of course those are the same tires that I installed on that 337 20 years ago. Boy, those McCreary's really hold up, don't they?"

I think the Franklin has some good features. There's a inspection cover on the top of the crankcase for a peek-a-boo view of the lower end. The cylinders have steel liners that can be replaced. They get 220 horsepower out of only 350 cubic inches, that's about the best power-to-displacement ratio of...

Pif, I mean Wayne, you may not be able to consistantly land your 170 as short as you're used to doing in your 150. #1, it's heavier, so there's more inertia/momentum to stop after touchdown. #2, you can't just plop it down like you can a 150. No offense meant, I've had both so I speak from experienc...

I don't have a pic of the hatch-latch, and even if I did, I don't know how to post it. I'll try to describe it: The "skewer" is mounted on the wing on A & B models, and on the strut on ragwings. It looks like a white nylon penis (sorry, but it does!). The reciever of the Hatchlatch mou...

...............my pet peeves is people 1) throwing the doors open, and 2) slamming them unnecessarily hard. .................... Zane Don't havw trouble with anyone (except the wind) throwing the doors open, but everybody seems to do the "cessna slam" that lotsa them require. Not needed o...

Joe, I'd say $500 for an STC is a bargain, Is that just for the paperwork? Where can you buy it? I'm always having people ask me about tailwheel conversions for 172's 175's and 182's.

It'd probably be helpful to have a part number or/or manufacturer. Do you have the paperwork? The STC for that mod should have the p/n. If not, Arkansas Dave has a similar set-up on his 170 to drive the supercharger. :P Maybe he has some paperwork with a part number.

I broke mine in 4-1/2 years ago per the ECI instructions, and using the recommended XC20-50. OIl comsumption and compressions are still good 800 hours later. Mine was ran-in for an hour on a test-stand by the overhauler before hanging it on the airplane. Miles, the ECI procedure sez to run at 75% po...

Joe, unless you guys have a good contact with a local FSDO or GADO or whoever does field approvals now, you might be ahead of the game to try to buy an STC- then it's just a logbook entry and 337 signoff by an IA. You might try looking up who owns the Bolen and other t/w STC's. From what I've heard,...

When I bought my 48 model 8 years ago it had about 3400 hours on the airframe. It now has about 4800-- no big deal. I know guys who have real low time airframes, they always worry about flying it too much and running the airframe time up. What fun is that? I just fly the hell out of mine, have fun, ...

Personally I never had enough trouble with the stock door latches to want to spend the time & money necesary to "upgrade" them to the rotary latch. A broken return spring on the phenolic latch-piece itself once in a while, easily remedied. You can form your own spring out of music wire...

My painted ragwing weighs 1310#, ready to gas-n-go. No vacuum system,VFR radios,3 seats. The actually weighed,bleep, lightest 170B I know of was Kelly Mahon's: 1,250#, ready to gas-n-go. No vacuum system,vfr radios,no paint, 3 seats,stripped interior,26" tires. I don't think there's too many 17...
