Re: 55 or 53 pitch to fly the trench?
I have flown both the trench and the tracks. I sort of like the track route better. Prince George to Smithers to Dease Lake to Whitehorse. Plenty of fuel stops and places to motel or camp. I think the tracks is shorter a bit too

Vinyl headliner installation with skylights
Just got through installing an Airtex vinyl headliner in our 170 It has skylights in the pilot and copilot position. I have always used wool in the past with sky lights as it is easy to install and all wrinkles can be steamed out. Airtex did make the forward panel wider as you do need extra material...

Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?
Hate to say it but powder coat sucks. Works great in dry conditions but hides cracks and when scratched, which happens the corrosion gets underneath and runs like wildfire. Of course that is in salt water float country. Nothing like epoxy primert and a good topcoat. POR 15 is a good primer that is b...

Re: Reason 127 why Franklin engine conversions are a bad ide
Actually the 14 mm depends on whether you have the original Franklin or the PZL version. This is the latter and has 18mm plugs. I do have a nearly full box of Champion 14 mm plug gaskets. They also did away with the floating oil pick up. Always did wonder why people put filters on the old style sinc...

Re: Reason 127 why Franklin engine conversions are a bad ide
For the Franklin it was. He has all the paperwork for that conversion. Amazingly he bought it with the Franklin installed. The previous owner REMOVED an Avcon 180 HP conversion to install the Franklin. Not sure when the 360 Continental became available. Had to persuade one mount hole to line up on i...

Reason 127 why Franklin engine conversions are a bad idea
This is what it takes to change a starter. Oh yes Sky tec no longer supports their starters so you get to buy one of the NOS ones at Franklin Aircraft Parts in Texas. The Sky Tec will barely fit in after you send it to Sky Tec to spin it to get the bendix out as far as it will go to be wormed in and...

Re: Attention to detail
Also, before doing any of the above, Tee into your oil pressure line or directly to engine with a known calibrated gauge to see what you really have for oil pressure. All gauges over time lose accuracy. An original gauge from a 1955 Cessna 170 is now 60 years old. Probability for error high

Attention to detail
This is sort of a rant. I really really am starting to hate taking on new annuals. It seems that owners shop around for the best price instead of the best value. After years of this the aircraft is usually in a condition that it takes a lot of parts and labor to bring into an airworthy condition. A ...

Re: floats for C-170
It is STC approved for Aerocet 2200's with a gross weight of 2200. Horsepower is 145 to unrestricted and I have a letter from the ACO for that. Aerocet says they plan to make kits this fall, the price is around 32,000.00 for everything if you already have a float kit installed
