I'd say to adjust them so there is no slack but so they aren't tight either. Check the spring/chain tension both with the tail on the ground and with it jacked up off the ground , with the jack under the tailspring bracket. On mine, they're tighter with the wheel off the ground. Either way, you don'...

I had the tail jacked up off the ground the other day to service the t/w assembly. I verified what I had thought-- which is that I have a little bit of up-and-down play at the forward end of the tailspring assembly. The vertical bolt/nut that holds that appears to be tight. The spring set is kinda b...

Now the 64 dollar question- is the Superior (as opposed to Lycoming) O-360 approved on the 180-horse STC's out there? Even though it's pretty much a knock-off, I'm betting no. Maybe Del-Air or someone will add this option to their STC. Actually, I think that the Lyc O-360 IS approved for cargas in s...

IPC help
I have the late-model "finger" style tailspring fuselage bracket on my ragwing. I have the ragwing IPC but naturally it doesn't have the later-model parts listed. I'm hoping someone can copy the illustration and list of part numbers for me out of their 170B IPC. If it's like the ragwing bo...

I have the later (raked forward) 180 gear on mine. I don't know if I'd go thru the hassle of installing 180 gear if I had lady legs on a 170. The earlier ragwing gear is too soft from what I've seen, I might want to replae that. I think the lady legs would be just as good or better than 180 legs, un...

Other than a lack of decent flying weather things seem generally OK around here. 3+ weeks of everyday rain is having it's effect: the ground is saturated, a few roads have washed out, trees are blowing over root wad and all (been windy too!). It's been warm so no snow down low, but the ski resorts a...

Unless you're hanging more weight on the nose- big engine, c/s prop, etc- I'd be concerned about what's gonna happen to your CG when you relocate the battery aft. Can't help but cause the CG to move aft, perhaps enough to affect load-carrying ability. I'd want to keep the empty CG pretty much as far...

Two cheap, quick, and easy solutions to holding the door open. 1) Have a small bungee handy to secure the open door to the strut. A friend of mine does this with his 180. 2) tie a string to the strut, when you want to hold the door open just open then close the window on the string. A charter operat...
