Cable replacement & Annual Advice

Today's preflight yielded an oddity - split flaps. Seems the rightwing flap cable frayed and gave up the ghost. I'm glad it happened on the ground and not on short final. I suspect that if one went, the others are thinking about it, so I plan to have all the cables replaced during the upcoming annua...

Current (and safe)

Gary, I use the ASA software to keep up on the questions & answers. I am a CFI, so it's important to know what it's like for my students, but I did it before becoming an instructor. I have a personal currency plan that starts late in the calendar year with buying the new FAR/AIM and reading thro...

Scott 3200A approval - enter the gauntlet?

All - I'm ready to replace my Maule tailwheel with a Scott 3200A wheel (I've read the forums for the pros & cons on the geometry, good stuff). My question is to anyone who has made this installation, did you have to go through the FSDO with more than just a 337? The 3200 is approved by the type ...

Electrical Questions

Well, this weekend was under the panel with the voltmeter to finally put together a schematic for the airplane. It was pretty straightforward, with a few interesting twists. A few questions remain, answers welcomed - 1) I could not find an obvious fuse for the cigarette lighter. Perhaps there was a ...

Generator -> Alternator

Rod, I am the custodian of N4179V, so we are closely related. One of my first and only mods was to replace the generator with an alternator. I like the notion of starting a dead system and charging (which a generator will do but an alternator will not), but I rather more like the more modern electri...

External Antenna Access

I'm upgrading the avionics in my C170 (not too much, just to add a bit more safety features). One thing that is very important to me is an antenna jack to get to the external antenna with my transceiver. Having had complete electrical failures in other aircraft, and then having my handheld only get ...

Another odd twist on fuel burn

I've had my C170 for 3 weeks now, and the first experiment was to get both tanks emptied and calibrated on a pipette so I have precise fuel burn rates to go from. I found that with the fuel selector in the 'right' position the left tank will happily empty out during flight, presumably into the right...

Mike, weather & schedules permitting I might just join y'all. We normally get 2-3 camping trips per year, but have only had one this year (the airplane purchase took a whole bunch of free time :-) Are you camping at the field? George, thank you, too for the kind reply. A whole world of discoveri...

It's home!

Well, N4179V is finally home in PAO (Palo Alto). I'm quite pleased with the decision to get a C170, and since this one was so well refinished it's quite the head turner. I do have the usual acquisition hiccups to work through - CHT gauge is not working properly - DG needs more clearance on the adjus...

Best Pricing on Items

Good day - I read through the forums and found a large list of "suggested vendors", that's extremely helpful, thank you. As part of taking delivery on my C170, I'm having a few items added, and wanted to know if I am getting the best prices around. I've searched far and wide, and here's wh...

Well, today I put my deposit down on a 1948 C170. Pending the prepurchase inspection, I'll be one of the gang. Very cool toy.

Thank you many times over

All, this is extremely helpful guidance, thank you. I am taking my mechanic to go in deep this weekend and will report back. Hopefully with an enrollment in the association. I will definitely put in the shoulder harness system. Certainly as the "last resort" for a bad flight attempt - but ...

1948 C170 - Pre-purchase guidance requested

I've searched the entire website (outstanding, thank you), and couldn't find explicit responses to some questions - with your indulgence I seek the collective wisdom. I've got my eye on an 1948 ragwing C170. It's been refinished inside and out, and it's a gorgeous airplane. We'll get the mechanic on...
