Find a type-experienced CFI

I echo and emphasize that find an instructor with time in the C170, or perhaps the C180 Skywagon. The C170 is a wonderful machine, but it is different than "training" conventional airplanes (Citabria). As a CFI, I don't have an issue teaching in most tricycle gear aircraft in which I have ...

Landing - secret sauce

Power is the magic element of a lot of good landings. It's ideal to be able to land from idle (and we teach students to get very comfortable with that from pattern altitude) - but modulating the throttle as much as you need often makes things work out quite nicely. I find that some students get froz...

Affirmative - original model (ragwing) C170 flaps. The tiny marketing flaps that don't lock in place (!)

BTW - the flap control arm connecting horn was on a 56 day backorder, but they turned them around in about 30.

Control Surface Rebuilds

I finally took the plunge and rebuilt my C170 flaps that had been beaten up by California summer winds (stuns me that the prior owners didn't spend the $25 on flap gust locks). Anyway, I highly recommend West Coast Wings in Ukiah, California. None of this is inexpensive (or even reasonable) but if y...

Endorsed versus Experienced

Taildragger (I added the extra g, hope that's okay) - if you would like some instruction in conventional aircraft, I can recommend my flying club. It's a bit far for you (Palo Alto), but we have one of the largest fleets of rentable tailwheel aircraft (4 Citabrias, 2 Decathlons, 1 Husky and 1 PT-17 ...

Flap Repair

It's annual time, and I am going to rebuild the flaps properly. I need to source two odd bits for the original 1948 ragwing. I welcome any pointers beyond the "list price" from the manufacturer. #0520106 - Bracket Assembly #0520120 - Clip, flap return spring And for those folks who haven't...

Air Vents

I concur, my 48 airvents did not have the spring-loaded ballbearing, and relied on a ring of velcro loops (not the hooks, but the softer half of velcro) to build up enough friction to stay in place. That works well enough, but I replaced them with an after market product as I liked being able to set...

Fuel selector - packing replacement

I searched the forums and found the thread about replacing the packing in the original brass fuel selector for ragwing models. Even the replacement part # for the original packing is no longer available, and the only guidance from Cessna is to replace the entire assembly. That is overkill. Can anyon...

Cables & hardware

After getting a split flap during a preflight, I replaced all of my cables during annual. I figured I'd only do it once in my lifetime, so I would do it right. I also replaced as much of the attaching hardware as could reasonably be reached or removed (eyes, bolts, nuts, etc.) The entire kit of hard...

Concur - largely

I'll withdraw the Venttubes suggestion, not critical, but really nice upgrades. re: tailwheel, yes the Scott 3200 (actually I like the 3200A) is what I was talking about. When I got my C170 it had a Maule tailwheel and I was very happy to get the Scott 3200A on there before I started playing around ...

Varnish-like "gunk" in tanks

Last year I installed new quick-sump drains, and this year they have been a bit sticky (to the point of having to pull them back by hand when draining fuel). I found that there is a bit of something that looks like varnish, and that's obviously a concern. I also noticed that there is a bit of the sa...

Good grip

David, I have been flying with Nomex flying gloves for a year now and I love them - even in very hot temperatures. I originally got them for the fire protection (just in case), but now I find that I can reach for or pick up anything without concern on temperatures, and they have the added benefit of...

Rosen install

The rivnuts provide a very secure mount over a single screw option. The visor should be moved into proper position to block the sun, and that puts a lot of stress on the mounting point. Rivnuts were quite straightforward, and makes the visors very secure. I highly recommend the visors as a fantastic...

Collection of questions

I've searched the databases and the literature, and found no answers. I solicit the collective wisdom of the troop - 1) My CheckMate checklist indicates that shutdown is done by switching Mags off, and then leaning the engine. That's different than all other's I've seen, and from the AFM/POH. Which ...
