Cessnut:
If you follow the link to the MX Library, you will find the balance spec.
(But I believe that the MX Library may be accessible only to members of The International Cessna 170 Association.)

Re: Valve Rotators on Superior cylinders.

While ECI's O-300 cylinders did have exhaust valve rotators, Continental's purchase of ECI relegated ECI cylinders to the history books. Special valve springs were used along with the rotocoil. Re: '48 Fuel Selector Valve Questions

As George stated, that tapered brass cone in a tapered brass bore of the early fuel valves can give trouble when the lubrication disappears. Mine started getting stiff to turn, and it is something you don't want to ignore since it controls your fuel supply. It is a bit of a nuisance removing and rei...

Re: Cleveland brake conversions numbers

I would say there still could be some uncertainty. While the assembly appears to be interchangeable, it may not guarantee that internal piece parts are interchangeable. But it probably is pretty likely. It may very well be that Cessna used Cleveland wheels and brakes, and simply re-identified them w...

Re: Airworx 180HP O-300 STC

George, you are thinking correct. A engine with a taller piston vs the same engine with a shorter piston, ie length from the center of the piston pin to the too of the piston, has a smaller displacement. That is contrary to my understanding of displacement! The overall displacement for a typical re...

Re: Exhaust stack too short?

I suspect that it may have been only listed in the '48 Ragwing IPC. It probably was an attempt to provide a little ram air into the rather anemic early '48 heater system. It appears that for the A model they added little scoops in front of the cylinders, which probably provided a little more airflow...

Re: Exhaust stack too short?

George:
Are you referring to the two holes thru the nosebowl?

I suspect that those are from a prior installation of an alternate duct system for cabin heat. Reference Figure 34, Ref #87 of the 170 IPC.

You might want to verify whether it is the same size as is used for the rod bearing cap nuts.

Re: Proper Tailwheel Steering Springs?

Don't waste your energy trying to make the steering work. Just put the pieces and parts together as they're supposed to be, and then get good at using the brakes for steering. I’ve seen several people post this, and always wondered. For some reason, my ‘55 steers pretty good. Tight turns or strong ...

Re: Engine mount to firewall bolts

No, the '48 Ragwing does not use the rubber bushings.

I don't believe this is the only omission or error that you will run across in the '48 IPC.
Why not measure the grip length that you need, and acquire the appropriate length bolt?

Re: '48 Fuel Cap Overflowing/Uneven Fuel Burn

Beside the gaskets the current version of fuel caps have a red-rubber check-valve/flap in the center of the lower cap. This is to allow air to enter the tank and is supposed to prevent fuel spraying as you describe. You should inspect that carefully. George, you may have forgotten that '48 fuel tan...
