Why you need an annual inspection on buying an aircraft.

More correctly why a buyer’s inspection should be an annual inspection by an independent IA. I just noticed that my old Tcraft, N96095, is for sale. I owned it in the mid 70s until my wife and her instructor crashed a perfectly functioning airplane. I elected to sell the wreck although it was quite ...

Re: Moving in and out of Hanger

I park outside all year long and sometimes pushing my 170 back into my spot is a huge pain when the snow and ice have built up before I have been able to clean it off. My solution is pretty low tech but it works well. I use two mountaineering pulleys, a couple of carabiners, a short loop of webbing,...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)

Don’t confuse the Airplane Flight Manual (one page front and back) with the Owners Manual (50 to 70 pages or so). You need to have a copy of the AFM in the plane. The TCDS is not required to be in the plane but it’s a very handy reference and you should keep one around the house or hangar . IIRC, Th...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)

BTW, your oil consumption does not appear to be unreasonable. I would guess most of us never fill above 7 qts. I never do even if I am starting a long leg of a cross country flight.

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)

You need to get a copy of the FAA TCDS (Type certificate Data Sheet) for your particular model. You can find this by googling FAA TCDS A-799. If you are a member, you can find iy in the members only section under Technical Documents. You can also check on your Airplane Flight Manual which you should...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)

Just a couple of further comments. Leaking past the rings rarely results in catastrophic failure. It usually results in higher oil consumption, and a dirtier belly. What is your normal oil consumption and what are you presently experiencing? It can also but not necessarily lead to lower power output...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)

Hold the phone. First watch a few videos about cylinders by Mike Busch of Savvy Aviation before you turn your mechanic loose replacing cylinders.

Here’s one to start: https://youtu.be/dSklruQiPz8

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD

This is the response I got to my question about whether or not the omission of the O-300A from the AD was an oversight. I advised Mr. Hamlin that the C-145 (predecessor to the O-300) and the O-300A powered thousands of C170s and 172s. These engines are all approved for the Tempest/Stratus CO-300 oil...

Re: Tempest/F&M filter adapter AD

[quote] [quote="twang"]Am I missing something, or does this AD apply to every version of the O-300 EXCEPT the O-300-A?

I emailed the FAA about just this point. I will post any reply I get.

Re: Is a 6 Cylinder Engine Monitor Overkill on a O-300A

Thank you all. I don’t see the 6 cylinder monitor as a leaning too but rather as an tool to monitor CHTs, all of them, and to help analyze any engine problems that might start to crop up. Still undecided if it’s worth the expense. I have been able to keep my plane in the air for the last 25 years wi...

Is a 6 Cylinder Engine Monitor Overkill on a O-300A

I have about 500 SMOH on my engine which has performed flawlessly so far (with the exception of my overhauled to new specs Continental (Bendix) mags.) Given the age (technology) of these engines and the inefficiency of the induction system, is it worth the time and expense to install a 6 cylinder en...

Re: Battery Options/Opinions

I just replaced my Concorde RG-25 after 8 years. At annual for the last 4 years I have been asking my mechanic if it was time to replace it. He kept testing and said no. It finally started to fail this winter. I have been astounded at how long it has lasted. In fairness, I have treated it pretty wel...

Risk of Potential Adverse 5G Effects on Radio Altimeters

Can someone please explain to me how the FCC and the FAA can screw this up so badly? In my naive fashion, it seems to me that testing the potential for interference is a pretty straight forward, objective process. Either there is interference or not, it’s a matter of physics. I would think that the ...

Re: The Turn Back to the Airport after engine Failure

George, Your question is one that concerns investigators. It was making a cargo flight to Kodiak so it was likely light in fuel and heavy on payload. It’s not at all clear why they could not maintain altitude on one engine. I have heard that the crew was having difficulty feathering the bad engine’s...
