Re: Low Oil Pressure

George, Last Thursday I took your advice and warmed the airplane up in the pattern. I don't recall for sure, but the air temp was somewhere in the upper 70s. Here's a few pics: Initial Engine Runup at 1700 RPM: IMG_2071.jpg Climbout at 2500 RPM: IMG_2072.jpg Downwind descending: IMG_2073.jpg Taxiing...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

George, thanks again for your detailed reply, all very good info. I’m still stuck working long days, but have tomorrow off, so hope to get to the airplane. I think I’ll take your advice and get it warmed up and see what it looks like. I flew another 170 recently and now that you mentioned it, it see...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

George, Sounds reasonable. I'll see what later this week brings for work travel, and if I'm home I'll give it a shot. Gary, I still have the 1/8" copper line with -2 AN fittings on the end, I believe. I had not read of the rigid lines being less than favorable, that's something to consider.

Re: Low Oil Pressure

George,

That was at idle to 1000 rpm for 30-35psi, with the new spring.

I’m tied up with work until at least Thursday, If I’m actually free and home that day I’ll be verifying with another gauge and I’ll get you the pressure at the higher RPM.

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Thanks for the continued discussion. As a recap: I changed the oil, and flew for about 8 hours while noticing this low pressure being a trend. Subsequently I did the following troubleshooting: 1) Changed the oil 2) Removed, checked, cleaned, replaced oil screen - no smoking gun here 3) Removed and r...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

George, I have not flown it. My thinking is that if it previously indicated 50-55 on start with cold oil and then indicated about 20 in cruise, that starting at 30-35 is only going to result in a lower pressure in cruise once the oil warms up. Now perhaps since the only change has been the pressure ...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Bruce, couple of questions since I’m definitely learning here. Regarding the use of the spring/washers in the Continentals, I get what you’re saying as it just dumps more as a bypass. I guess I don’t understand why it results in a higher indicated oil pressure. Seco...

Re: Greetings from a new owner and a couple of fun items for

Congratulations Jason!

Glad I could participate in making it happen!

Also, that’s a sharp looking picture for the article! Must be two good folks flying it!

Re: Low Oil Pressure

For what it's worth, I replaced the existing spring and washer pack with the new one. On start up with cold oil, pressure went to 30-35 psi instead of the typical 50-55 psi. Looks like I'm not the first person with this airplane to discover this problem. Back to the drawing board. I guess the last i...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Thank you Gary for the torque specs. I removed the existing pressure relief valve. I’ve attached two pics. The spring is not the same as the replacement. Additionally I’ve found a stack of about 3/8” worth of washers in the cap. ECECF763-439A-4C40-8AD3-7D165BACB0CB.jpeg F8E56164-5544-492F-BD18-DC5BD...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Can’t seem to find a copy of a maintenance manual for the C145. Anyone got the torque spec, if any, for the oil pressure relief valve cap/acorn nut?

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Guys,

Thanks for the info. Airplane definitely isn’t going anywhere until this gets worked out.

As much as I want to go out tomorrow and pull the pressure relief valve and inspect it, might be time to get an A&P out to help get things straightened out.

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Bruce, The change in oil was an attempt to see if it boosted the oil pressure, it did not. The idle oil pressure is 50-ish cold. After a 20 min flight on the ground at idle it’s not even reading, or it’s barely off the lower stop. I will say this airplane has always had an indication between 5-10 at...

Re: Low Oil Pressure

George,

Thanks for the input. That pic was at cruise RPM of 2300-2400, which is why I’m a little concerned.

My next troubleshooting step is to verify the gauge and then the pressure relief valve.

Thanks for the input.

Low Oil Pressure

Starting to troubleshoot a seemingly low oil pressure. I've started to see a low oil pressure indication since my last oil change (June 2, 21, Tach 2692.75), see the pic below: IMG_1935.jpg Two things of note occurred at the point of last oil change, I replaced the ADC oil screen and summer hit Spok...
