George, you are a never-ending fountain of information. Thank you for being here and doing what you do! I have a Gieger counter I'll loan you if you pay the freight and return it to me. I appreciate the offer but think I'd rather use the excuse to make a trip down your way. Would you care to elabora...

George, Unless I can find that spare Geiger counter in the hangar, is there another way to determine the presence of Radium? Seems strange that if its so dangerous to the environment and ultimately people, that our "friends" in OKC havent issued an AD to remove and replace. As you say, who...

Thanks to everyone for the contacts. I will start calling them on Monday. Before I send the altimeter out though, I'm going to take it up and cross check it (without connecting to the static system) against the certified altimeter. If it tracks the same as the new one up to 10K, then the new one wil...

Static System Testing, Altimeter woes

I just had a static system, transponder certification done yesterday on 78C. After all of the leaks were isolated, there was still a significant leak in the system. I’m pretty bummed that the source of the leak was isolated to the (original) altimeter :( . Although the altimeter is still accurate ...

Joe, I know you don't like to disturb 78D whilest its snuggly tucked in the hangar with the Barney Blanket and preheat, but have you looked at the exhaust stains on your cowl? Perhaps we need to discuss over a 30 pack and retorque your LG.

Am I correct in assuming that you are using autofuel? Auto fuel unlike avgas, will produce a oily soot on the cowl, inside the stacks and on the plugs. Not sure how much soot your talking about but I too have had that problem. One other reason I believe the left side is "sootier" than the ...

Heres what the EAA says (http://www.vintageaircraft.org/events/judging.html) re your question: Classic An aircraft constructed by the original manufacturer, or its licensee, on or after September 1, 1945, up to and including December 31, 1955. Since the topic of bleeding brakes has come up, I thought I would pass on a painless way to accomplish this task that I have found very simple and almost fun to do. What’s better is that you can do it by yourself, no contorting around the master cylinders with 5606 and there’s virtually no mess....

Bruce, I think you will find the brackets (inboard side) for the wheel pants are more difficult to find than the pants. They will require some fitting to clear the calipers on the clevelands. Alot of fitting if you have the double pucks. Also the axle nuts to accomodate the pants can be challenging ...

The very quick thinking mechanic/pilot had both of them kick the windshield out and then convinced the passenger to climb out and replace the weight of the engine with his body. Joe, I heard that story too. Just prior to the prop/engine departing their company, I understand the pilot leaned ...

All right Joe, now you know that’s not how it all really went down….but I admit, your version does make a better story. You know, when you ask someone if they hear a “rattle” one would think about a pair of shades or a set of keys in the glovebox or something trivial like that. It wouldn’t...

George, I apologize if I implied that you were "making this stuff up". Not my intent. I appreciate all of the research that Cessna has done and unfortunately I am not a member of CPA to view the Tech Notes. The doubt I have regarding the vent system revolves around the fact that using vent...
