Re: different engines in 170,s

I once inquired into the idea of converting a B-model to an O-470…. but discovered the engine weighs 140 lbs more than an O-300 ….. which, sitting forward of the firewall…. made for some CG compromises that were untenable. The IO-360 only weighs about 35 lbs more than the O-300…but produces similar ...

Re: CS Prop info

https://media.mcfarlaneaviation.com/documents/cessna170-172-175performancetestdatar1.pdf That’s interesting data….. They operated it 250 over gross wt…. and claim a shortest ground roll with a 3 blade over a 2 blade… something out-of-the-ordinary. Usually 2-blade props outperform 3-blades in takeof...

Re: Primer Knob Spins

So I decided to punt the final fix on this issue and just bought some thin CA glue and put a few drops down between the knob and the shaft. It has been working well for the last dozen flights. It is super nice being able to easily rotate the primer to lock it again. If the glue doesn't last I'll ha...

Re: Broken rudder return spring

It’s impossible to think of the Blueldr without a smile and a tear. Even a “corrective scolding” from that man was a humorous pleasure….(not that I’d know anything about that…) I once (anonymously and without a return-address) sent him a “racy” photograph taken of an “extra-curricular cockpit ...

Re: TX Solar Eclipse Fly-in Apr. 6-8

Let me Add that our own Bruce Fenstermacher contributed a set of his “MouseTrap” springs-kit to the Fly-In as a “door prize” offering. :P Unfortunately, due to weather, few airplanes flew in…and none of those that did needed such a kit. The kit will be brought to the KY convention and anyone i...

Re: TX Solar Eclipse Fly-in Apr. 6-8

I’d like to mention that Member Patrick Bramlett (AL) contributed the Solar Glasses. Thank You!

(But Patrick, you might want to mention to your supplier they’re combustible and not too durable for welding…. had to resort to other means…)

Re: TX Solar Eclipse Fly-in Apr. 6-8

Glad to hear of the good turnout. That's a nice shot. As the eclipse passed over us I was exiting my optometrists office with my eyes fully dilated. I wished it had gotten that dark here but it hadn't and wasn't going to. It was overcast and for the most part we could not see the sun though I wasn'...

Re: TX Solar Eclipse Fly-in Apr. 6-8

I had not anticipated that my Runway Lighting would activate and my WindSock Spotlight would illuminate during the Total Darkness. Here’s a shot of the SOLAR FLARE which occurred during the Total Eclipse…. (We had a great turn-out and a Fantastic View as the Weather cleared EXACTLY at the Righ...

Warm it up around the patch and do a fresh oil change if you’re picky….otherwise…Duct tape the exhausts, use cowling plugs or duct tape there to discourage birds, and on the wing leading edge vents. Store it indoors if possible.

Re: Cowlings needed for 1954 170B

I've seen a number of 170 cowlings that were both 'beyond repair' and still in service. I am somewhat surprised that there still isn't an approved faithful replica available in carbon or glass. I visited with a company at Oshkosh about nose-bowls upper/lower and they took scans of my ‘53…for the pu...

The 1958-59 Endurance Flight

A bit more information on that Hacienda endurance flight than I’ve known previously…. I didn’t know they dealt with oil changes in-flight… nor that the pilot was a WW2 bomber-pilot turned slot-machine mechanic.
