Re: Fuel drain drip
My '48 does have 1/8 NPT for all fuel drain valves, and I know of at least 3 other '48's that also have this thread. This conflicts with the charts that some fuel drain valve suppliers use, which claim that the fuel tanks have 7/16-20 threads (which is true for the 170A and 170B I believe). Also, on...

Re: New Owner with a Cowling Question
On my '48, the cowling also wants to contact the engine case (just behind the top of the prop flange). If you let it, it will cut a hole in the cowling in short order. My cowling has a patch in that location.... A bead of silicone in the right place applied across the front of the crankcase is your ...

Re: Federal 2500 ski value
The price listed by beaverbill is about what I paid for mine about 8 years ago.
However, I had to have them shipped. Shipping seemed quite high to me (~$450 via UPS, including insurance). They are not all that light, and are pretty bulky.

Re: Exhaust system repair - need suggestions
Not that hard to fabricate a new flange, weld a new tube stub to it, cut the old riser near the existing weld, and weld the new one on. Of course alignment is important, but it would be a pretty simple fixture to capture alignment. Eventually you will probably have to give up on the pancake muffler ...

Re: '48 170 Right Wing Tanks
No fitting exists for a drain valve in the outboard tank (unless someone has welded one in after it left the factory).
But, the rear interconnect line is positioned pretty well for allowing water to drain to the inboard tank.

The first instructor doesn't always work out! Some instructors are great pilots, but poor communicators. Some are marginal pilots but good communicators. Some students learn by seeing, some by hearing. Sometimes the particular student/instructor combination just doesn't mesh. Try another instructor ...

Re: Airforms Baffling
I didn't get the whole kit, but I did put those pieces on my '48. I didn't have any fit issues (which surprises me because my luck can be as bad as anyone's).

Re: Airforms Inc baffles
I do not have a complete Airforms set on my '48, but I do have some.
My recollection is that since the part numbers for the '48 and the A model were the same, they should fit, and in fact they did. I have no complaints.

Re: Univair tail spring
I finally got to the building where my spare tailwheel spring is. Main leaf .313 2nd leaf .263 3rd leaf .200 4th leaf .200 Very similar to Gary's measurements. I agree with Jim's assessment. I would want to sort this out and be able to use the standard spring stack, even it meant some new parts and ...

Re: Univair tail spring
Might be interesting to actually measure the thickness of the leaves in the old spring set, and the new spring set....
I think I can find my spare spring set, and measure it for comparison.

Re: Proper Landing gear axle attachment bolts
These NAS bolts are a high strength bolt, and have a radius between the underside of the head and the bolt shank. A special washer with a countersink that provides relief for the radius is required. Without the special washer, the regular washer can dig into the radius which creates a stress riser a...
