Re: 1948 Landing Light Options
My '48 had a leading edge landing light installed when the wings were metallized in 1961. It looks like they used a custom bracket from somewhere called "F. Ricks" (or maybe Fricks?) in Selma, CA. I have attached a PDF with the relevant parts of the 337 in case it is useful to you.

Re: Uavionics TailbeaconX
Fortunately I have a great relationship with my A&P and I can do everything except the paperwork myself. He'll charge me for his time for that and I'll probably need to buy some materials but I still figure it would be doable for $2000, minus whatever I might be able to recoup by selling the old...

Re: 170 (ragwing) seating limitation
It's in the TCDS and AFM. Every '48 should have a placard that says, among other things, "with 2 people in the rear seat both front seats must be occupied". I had some of these placards made last year when I did a panel upgrade. See attached. They measure 4"x1.25". I have a bunch...

Re: Uavionics TailbeaconX
I'm getting tempted to go with a TailbeaconX. The avionics shop was just barely able to get my KT76A through a 91.413 check, so I've already been keeping a lookout for a yellow-tagged replacement. uAvionix has a trade-up program from my SkyBeacon and I already have an AV-30-C so the upgrade would co...

Ragwing cowl compatibility
The cowl on my 48 has gotten pretty ratty over the years. Patches, doublers, lots of stop-drilled cracks. At this point I suspect paying a good sheet metal man to repair the damage would cost more than sourcing a decent replacement. The early 170A cowls use the same part numbers as the '48 so no wor...

Re: Does anyone have an EI FP5L fuel computer?
I occasionally fly a turboprop with an FP-5. I never set it by the fuel I add. I stick the tanks, verify the stick against the fuel gauges, and set it to what is actually in the airplane. That avoids accumulated error, but more importantly avoids error from an incorrect assumption about how much fue...

Tailwheel shimmy dampener
Got an email from Airframes Alaska advertising a new hydraulic shimmy dampener for 3200 tailwheels, including the 170: Tailwheel Shimmy Dampener Only $950 8O I am definitely _not_ in the market. I don't think 170s with properly maintained tailwheels have much of a reputation for shimmy, but maybe so...

Crankcase breather length
Over the last few years I've had three different people, unprompted, mention that my breather looked "too short". As far as I know none of these people are 170 owners or A&Ps. On my plane the breather extends about 1/2" below the belly. I suspect that the length isn't critical and...

Re: Skis on a Cessna 170
A set of very nice looking Federal AWB 2500s just popped up today on the Facebook "Bush and Float Plane Classifieds" group. Asking price for skis, axles, and pump is $9,800. I'm no expert but that seems in line with what I've seen in the past.

Those are tow lugs, for use with a V-shaped tow bar and a tractor or tug. They aren't designed for vertical loads and might bend if you try it.

Re: Taildragger Aviation still in business?
Lorraine and Ken Morris owned the STC when I bought mine a few years ago. I thought they sold it to Lowe, but I guess not. I don't have contact info for them, but they were based out of Poplar Grove airport the last I knew.

Re: Taildragger Aviation still in business?
I used the contact form back in September and got a response within a day. Taildragger Aviation is/was David Lowe. The email I've got for him is davidlowe.c140@gmail.com. (Normally I wouldn't post somebody's email openly without permission, but it's all over the Cessna 120/140 site)

Re: Insurance
My previous insurer was Old Republic. Their quote this year was a 9% increase over last year for the same coverage. My new insurer is Global Aerospace. The Bullock Agency in St Charles, IL is the agency I use, they have done a great job of running down quotes and answering my questions over the year...

Re: Insurance
Just renewed my insurance. For $1mil/100k on a $30k hull I was quoted $868. That's about $20 less than last year, despite increasing the hull somewhat. Commercial and instrument rated with 585 TT, 285 TW, and 245 hours in the 170. It's that time of year again. With the hull upped to $35k and having...
