20 Amp generator

I'm confused. The c170a electrical manual states that a 20 amp generator is an option. My generator is a Delco Remy L101890 20 Amp model. The type certificate lists the Delco Remy 1101876 which I assume is a 12 Amp generator, the Delco Remy 25 Amp 1101879 and the Delco Remy 35 Amp 1101880 or 1101898...

MS o-rings

I am going to replace the O-rings in my 1954 170B fuel selector. I notice in the AC Spruce catalogue the MS O-rings are "not resistant to automotive fuels". I have an STC for automotive fuel and usually burn a mixture of autogas and 100LL. I check all autogas for ethanol before using it. I...

static and refueling

I am always wary about refueling my 170B on floats using the standard red plastic fuel containers but have few alternatives. There is no fuel at the floatbase and using a metal fuel can will surely scratch up my wing and leading edge surfaces even worse. Is there a way to bond a plastic fuel can to ...

Re: Climb Prop

I installed the 1A175/DM 8042 this spring and it was well worth the price. I operate on floats most of the time and the performance off the water is very much improved. Climb is impressive and the 145 doesn't seem to be as burdened as it was with the original floatplane prop. In my opinion the 8042 ...

Re: Surface area of a 170B

Any idea what the standard scheme was? Probably stripes on bare metal, I suspect. My airplane is shown on page iv of the Cessna 170 Book (4th edition). This may be the standard scheme as I have seen it on other 170s.

Re: McCauley 1A175DM prop

I got the 8042 and am very pleased with the results. On floats the aircraft gets on the step a lot faster and climbs better. I don't think I have sacrificed more than 2-3 knots of cruise but the 7647 seaplane prop I removed was only 74.25" long so I gained a bit more than 4" of length. I c...

Surface area of a 170B

I am considering refinishing my '54 170B but am undecided if I should retain the polished metal and stripes (which I love, but hate to polish) or paint the entire aircraft. Since I operate on floats with the C145, weight is a big consideration. Does anyone know what paint adds to the aircraft weight...

PropGuard and float operations

At the Kelowna convention I noticed a few 170s on the ramp with PropGuard which is a protective, leading edge laminate for fixed pitch props. Operating mostly on floats where water spray takes a toll on your prop, I thought it might be a good investment for the new McCauley 80" prop I just purc...

Re: Leaking Wing Sump

One of my drains also leaks a bit. At the last annual, I planned to replace both of them but found them frozen in the fuel tank. Both my AME and I were hesitant to apply a lot of force, not wishing to break anything, so I decided to live with it. Any suggestions as to how to free up a stuck drain?

McCauley 1A175DM prop

Judging from members who are using the McCauley 80" prop with the Kenmore STC, most seem to prefer the 8043. I'm hearing from Kenmore that they can't get the 43 pitch prop from McCauley as they don't manufacture them. Did all you guys who recommend the 8043 on the forum repitch an 8040 or 8042?

I measured the prop today and it is well within the limits outlined in the McCauley manual. It's only about 1/4" over the min. diameter though. Think I'll start looking for an 80" prop since I operate on floats most of the time. Thanks for all the help.

No static RPM problems and I had the prop off a couple of years ago and inspected for corrosion, etc. We also replaced the prop bolts. I suspect he thinks due to it's age it may have been polished too thin.

McCauley DM 7647 dimensions

Where can I find the minimum dimensions for this prop? My AME is insisting it be measured but I don't really want to send it out to a shop. Isn't this something that can be done in the field? I have searched the site but can not find the full table of correct dimensions.

Thanks for all the info. I actually have nine shock mounts on my panel. All but two were broken. They have obviously been replaced since manufactured since some of the nuts were differnt sizes and there were no ground straps or washers on any of the mounts.
