Re: hatch latch receiver, I had to "shave" the thickness of the door gasket to accomodate the depth of the receiver. It's not too deep (maybe 3/16" or so, I'd have to go look), but my door gasket, I suspect, is thicker than some others. You may find you have to either shave the gasket...

Dave, Williams Aircraft sells them already setup for the Hatch Latch. The bracket has a nylon unit with a ball-end that engages the HatchLatch receiver. The receiver attaches on the inside of the door over the existing hole for the old door stop so it's basically invisible. I think I paid $60/side f...

The locks on my '52 work - the pilot's side is keyed and the co-pilot's side has the knob on the door you lift to engage the lock from the inside. Ditto Eric on the Hatch Latch door stops. I put them on two years ago and they work great. Williams Aircraft - San Angelo, TX sells them. Check the 170 N...

I'll second that. Up here in the Northeast prices for everything are high. I have two quotes so far for exterior paint: $7,800 & $10,000 8O The prices out west and down south seem more reasonable. I'd be interested in hearing of good paint shops with fair prices. I'll travel if the price and qua...

George, I completely understand and agree with your position on serial numbers vs. model year vs. year of production. Your '53 is a good example of that, as you stated. I had forgotten about the fact that aircraft being re-imported to the States would gain an Airworthiness Certificate upon their ret...

OK, I know I'm probably going to sound like a nit-picking pain in the @$$, but don't take it that way. I guess 15 years in the Information Technology field has turned me into someone who can't let go of something if I have two sources of information that are supposed to jive, but don't (or at least,...

C170 Serial Numbers

I received an early Christmas present of an Aviation Legends 2003 calendar the other day and upon opening it I realized that someone had the good sense to include a C170 as one of the aircraft (March). I was reading the stats on the plane (listed as a 1952 170B) and I noticed the serial number of 25...

What little water problems I had were solved with the Monarch risers and caps. I doubt the original vent is the source of your water problem. My 170 has been outside for the three years that I've had it (2 years with the Monarch mods) and the only time I get water now is if I fail to fill the tanks ...

Aircraft Spruce pg. 322 $56.00 or Wag-Aero pg. 113 $59.95. These are sheets with placards for the 170/172/175 models so you'll get more than just strictly 170 placards. Wag-Aero also sells just the fuel selector placard for $10.50. A/C Spruce probably does as well, but I'm not able to find it at the...

AD 79-10-14 R1 applies to multiple Cessna models including the entire 170 series (s/n 18729 through 27169) and addresses the "problem" of fuel tank vent obstruction. It requires that at least one fuel cap be vented as an alternate venting source should the original vent become blocked. Per...

I have a '52 with a single venturi on the right side... it does the same thing. It's annoying, but I've gotten used to it. When my passengers get bored waiting to takeoff on a hot summer day, they hang an arm out the window, pat the end of the venturi and play a tune

Regarding Steering Springs, could someone (George?) comment on the differences between the original tension springs and the compression springs? I currently have the compression springs and am wondering if I should install the original style tension springs.

Thanks,
Doug.

Nope... AOPA's AIG is AIG from Bethany, OK. I found this out when I went shopping for insurance after insuring through AOPA. I called AIG for a quote, they asked who I was presently insured with and I said AOPA. They asked who the underwriter was and I honestly had no idea and they gave me a verbal ...

I installed them a couple years ago on my '52 170B. No fuel leaks, no water in the tanks, no problems. The only caveat might be the fact that an epoxy is used (in conjunction with the screws) to bond the riser to the panel that covers the tank and to the tank filler neck. I'm not sure how you'd go a...

There's an AD that requires at least one of the caps to be vented (right side). It doesn't prevent you from venting both, but is does prevent you from going back to the two unvented caps. I had similar problems when I had the Cessna vented caps which is why I went with the Monarch ones. I'd prefer t...
