Re: Flap assisted take off
I don't do serious short-field work, but my normal short or soft field technique is to start clean, pull in full flaps around 35-40 mph to help "pop" the plane into ground effect, accelerate, reduce one notch once I'm into the green arc, then take all the flaps out once I'm climbing away. ...

Re: New Install Vertical Card Compass PAI 700
I just used this same bracket (PACMO-2CN) to hang an Airpath C-2300 compass from my center strap. Even though the bracket is designed for a PAI vertical card compass, the Airpath compass fit with no alterations. I would expect that any 2 1/4" compass would fit. I ended up trimming the bracket a...

Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?
An AV-30C attitude indicator, PM3000 intercom, and a new floating panel. PXL_20210101_222210689.jpg I actually bought most of this stuff a while ago but finally got it all put in the airplane. The AV-30C lets me delete the venturis and a whole lot of plumbing. It also puts an attitude indicator in a...

Re: '48 Fuel Cap Overflowing/Uneven Fuel Burn
I had a very similar issue a couple of years ago with my '48. Took off on a cold morning with full fuel. About 45 minutes into the flight my girlfriend/copilot says "hey, is your left fuel gauge broken?" It was reading zero, right tank was reading full. We landed about 5 minutes later at t...

Re: Insurance
Just renewed my insurance. For $1mil/100k on a $30k hull I was quoted $868. That's about $20 less than last year, despite increasing the hull somewhat. Commercial and instrument rated with 585 TT, 285 TW, and 245 hours in the 170.

Re: Call Signs
I've always just said "Cessna 2669V". Unless it's my home airport they probably assume I'm 172, and that's close enough for me. Occasionally (usually if I'm picking up flight following from approach), they'll come back with "2669V, say type Cessna".

Re: 170 Models
A couple years ago my dad used the Guillows kit to make me a model of my 170. He wasn't happy with the quality of his workmanship but I love it. Building a stand for it is on the quarantine project list.

Re: Dripping sludge!
Welcome to the dirty bellies club. My '48 does the same thing, it's just a frothy oil/water mix dripping out of the breather. Nothing to worry about.

This is the parts list: https://www.airframesalaska.com/3200-Series-Tailwheel-Replacement-Parts-p/abi-3200a.htm When I did mine a couple of years ago I just bought a complete rebuild kit from Airframes Alaska. Saved a few bucks versus buying the parts individually and in my case clearly the only mai...

Re: Wish I woulda ...
I think most 170s have been upgraded already, but if you don't have them, definitely go with Cleveland wheels and brakes on the mains and the later model tailwheel bracket and Scott 3200 tailwheel. You already mentioned shoulder harnesses, also consider some sort of stop to prevent the seat from sli...

Re: Tail Beacon (ADS-B Out)
I certainly hope that your understanding is correct, Brian. But Karl's report of the uAvionix representative implies that without radar interrogation there is no ADS-B. Just to double check what I saw in my own experiments I emailed uAvionix support. Here's what they said: I have a SkyBeacon and it...

and that the ADS-B Out does no reporting at all unless in a radar environment That is not true. I have a SkyBeacon and can see my own 986 signal on ADS-B "in" even when the transponder is powered off. What does happen is the squawk is not emitted as part of the the ADS-B out, but callsign...

Re: ADS-B uavionix updates
I completed my skyBeacon install tonight. Actually getting the unit on the airplane took me about 90 minutes, including driving to the other side of the airport to pick up a spare ring terminal after I screwed up crimping the first one. It was raining that night so I came back the next evening to pu...

Re: Factory recommended OAT to install/remove winterization
Bruce made me a great set if winterization plates last year. I use the oil sump plate at 60F, but down here in Illinois pretty much never use the cowl plates. They just seem to be too much unless OAT is down in the teens. Between freezing and 15 I use one or two strips of tape instead.
