Re: Whiz Wheels

I am forced to fly a G1000 panel but ALWAYS keep my E6B in the seat pocket. In the 170 it is much easier/faster to use than my Garmin 155. That may sound like a techno-phobe but glass pannel bump/twist/scrolling is frankly no fun at all and for me instead of providing improved situational awareness ...

Re: "Wing Tent"

Ten years ago I was plane camping on the OR coast and was parked next to a family in a C206 with a "wing tent". This was the coolest thing in that it was essentially a nylon(coated for rain protection) sleave that slipped over the wing and formed a sort of tunnel with zipped doors on each ...

Re: Survival hand gun or rifle Question

My ramp checks followed what GH indicated to the letter. However on both the tone was very acusatory and I was essentially guilty (of something though not sure what) until I could prove otherwise, which I did item by item. The inspectors even questioned paint seals on inspection plate screws chargin...

Re: Survival hand gun or rifle Question

I HAVE been the recipient of 2 ramp checks. The first and most memorable was around 1988 when a C182 loaded with three badge wearing FAA folks followed me to my hangar. They played good cop/bad cop while I went through 45 min of “inspection” including all manner of aircraft and pilot documentati...

Re: Pitot Tube Bug Flap

Unless I execute one of my patented landings designed to calibrate the local university seismometer my bug flapper stays open even after shut down. I have often forgotten to check the thing following flight only to find it still in the open position days later (in the hangar). A slight finger bump w...

Re: Need I/A in PNW for 170B

Thanks Steve and Dan....good info and references. Sorry about the confusion with airport identifiers however folks in our corner of the map know what PNW is and those that don't would not likley be of useful assistance in this matter.

Re: Flying with the doors off

I flew a 1959 C172 sans right door for years hauling skydivers. Other than real cold in winter it was no biggy at all. Occasionally at decent speed the headliner would sort of pump/buffet/flex in and out and of course anything loose would be either blown out or more likely blown around to catch unde...

Just a $02 worth FYI. I have both work planes retro fitted with Oregon Aero seat rebuilds as well as flight helmet liners. As stated above on cold mornings the seats are stone for about 60 seconds then great. Routine 5 hour flights are then tolerable. When the 170 is ready for new seats I am going t...

A very good question. My TCP syringe plunger seal(s) give it up after only a few months of use also. I have tried rigging up various other syringe-like arrangements but all have been less than satisfactory. I ended up using the dispensing bottle provided and keep it in a double zip lock bag while ha...

Well you will certainly receive positive response regarding the C170A/B from this site however there are some limitations to consider with this aircraft. In the stock configuration it is (in my opinion only) a rather marginal performer as a back country machine in even moderate density altitudes. Oh...

On my previous ride I "installed" a PA 400 4pl portable intercom. I say installed but all it required was routing some wires under the carpet etc. I mounted the unit via velcro immediately aft of the fuel selector plate. Once done it looked very sanitary and the internal lighting made it e...

I put one in about 3 years ago and it's worked fine. We used the factory K settings and it's accurate to within limits that i would accept (I don't fly or plan to within 0.5 gal). I didn't receive a video but found the quick ref card adequet but keep it handy for reference on operations other than t...
