Re: First Flight
Excellent! While the 170 is so very easy to fly, the footwork required on taxi, takeoff and landing needing braking methods being ever so gentle just might make a better primary tailwheel trainer than say a Decathalon or Citabria which is just too easy and few lessons learned. Crosswind landings wit...

Re: Mixing it up with nose draggers
Great post and well written! Scary winds to deal with. Looking forward to Osh16 this year and seeing that formation flight. Thanks for taking time to share.

Re: Excess oil on cylinder 6 and spark plug fouling
You will figure this out I am sure because your approach is very good and you have eliminated many things. The oil you are seeing on the intake just might be your best clue even though the tolerance appears very good on the valve guide. Remember that the 0-300 and C-145 cylinders typically run much ...

Re: Rebuilding 1948 fuel selector
Kurt, call Wentworth back and talk to Jason (I think that was my contact there). They should reimburse you 100% including shipping. They only had two of the 0511122 valves. I bought one of them and perhaps whoever you talked to was not aware of the 2nd valve that Jason identified or maybe it was sol...

Re: dent in wing tip
It would help if you posted a photo of the exact location. Two things: thing 1....if is close to the nav light, perhaps removing the light would give you a chance to make a curved steel hook with a knob on the end to reach it and pull it out. thing 2....if the dent is in the leading edge of the wing...

Re: Rebuilding 1948 fuel selector
Kurt, I am fairly sure the #5 spring should not be on the inside of the #4 cup as the valve shown appeared to have never been apart that came from Wentworth until I took it apart in this exact order to clean it (found very little wear on the pin or plug indicating little use or very low time). Also,...

Re: Rebuilding 1948 fuel selector
Don't use fuel lube is my personal advice. Why not fuel lube? Regular oil is gone the minute gas flows through. Not so with fuel lube. Bruce, I have used fuel lube before and it doesn't prevent the valve from getting hard to move with time. Also, when you open up the valve, the residue from the gre...

Re: Rebuilding 1948 fuel selector
I don't think so Bruce! It is very hard metal that has spring qualities that make the detents snap into position. But someone did make it before but suspect it was stamped out with a very good machine???Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:Is it #3 that breaks? Looks pretty easy to duplicate.

Re: Rebuilding 1948 fuel selector
I just bought a used one from Wentworth and it was the exact replacement. About $300 and warrantied if it doesn't work. Great source for hard to get parts. I had the same detent issue and the replacement worked just fine. Don't use fuel lube is my personal advice. Just oil it good in the re-install ...

Re: Jacking Wings Up
Using an engine hoist with a strap around the engine mount immediately next to the firewall seems to be the popular method. One gotta is to be careful when lifting one side if you have low ceilings, beams or lights. Doesn't take much to raise a wing tip into one. don't know that you couldn't raise ...

Re: 4 tanks in a 1948 170 ragwing
FWIW, the Seattle FSDO just rejected my proposed 337 for a fourth fuel tank using the Rex Labrie paperwork. The inspector said that while my 337 looked great, the FAA's new policy is that any mod to the fuel system requires data from a DER. So, if anyone gets an approval without involving a DER, pl...

Re: 4 tanks in a 1948 170 ragwing
Has anyone ever determined (guessed) approximately how many 1948 ragwings got the 4th tank installation using the one-time STC using the Rex Labrie limited STC available in the MX Library? http://www.cessna170.org/forums/membersOnly/pdfDownload.php?download_file=079%20limited%20STC%20SA869NW%20to%20...

All of your responces are simply incredible. Thank you! Best thing I ever did was join TIC170A! Looking closer at the Spruce option. That just might be a solution with minor modifications. Worth a try at such a good price.

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
I think you will find that the 6749 valve is not a drop in replacement. *It has a Delrin spool (which some would view as an improvement). *I believe that it will give "Off-Left-Right", but no "Both" position. (Adding an extra hole to the Delrin spool would give the "Both&qu...
