Re: HIGH,HIGH OIL TEMP!!
gahorn......when you commented that my tail pipes are reversed are you referring to left vs. right OR facing forward vs. backward?? Just curious, It came this way to me. Also I have a pancake muffler on the co-pilot side and a round Hanlon on the pilot side. Don't know if that affects tailpipe orien...

Re: HIGH,HIGH OIL TEMP!!
Went back to hangar....gage is the old style with a green arc and a red line at 225. This is definitely a small lip on the lower cowl, I don't know if it is original?

Re: HIGH,HIGH OIL TEMP!!
Thanks guys.....no rabbit trails...no worries. I attached a ground in a vain attempt to see if it made a difference (didn't think it would on a mechanical system). I read one reply about a service bulletin that required going to a different gage and sender on the 0300d. I suppose that I reasoned tha...

Re: HIGH,HIGH OIL TEMP!!
Well...what we have here is a situation that back in my days of Army Aviation, we used to refer to as fubar. Thanks for the replies! They all seem to be correct. Wrong gage installed (mine is Rochester but No curve....since it is not electric). Probe in wrong location (just moved it). Lip size on bo...

HIGH,HIGH OIL TEMP!!
'48 170....0-300D F&M Oil filter adapter. Did a top overhaul about 10 hrs ago (Chrome channel)w/steel rings. Oil temp extremely high (almost full right deflection @75-80% power for break-in). Staying at approx. 1000-1500 PA. Cylinder head temps are in the 325 degree range. Prior to the overhaul ...

Useable Fuel
I am confused after looking at some old posts....and then glancing at my cruise performance chart that I got from "somewhere." Are the original tanks (on a '48 170) 25 gal r/s and 12.5 gal l/s "total" or is that the useable fuel per side? Chart says that the ranges and endurances...

Re: Leading edge landing light
PS. I never did use that stc for the light. During all the "research" I found that my installed wing landing lights worked beautifully after I rewound the motors. When I find some time I will write about the process and send a few pics(if I can figure out how to post them).

Re: '48 heater
Thanks for the info. I also discovered that in the ipc it shows a scat tube from the heat box back to the outlets. Mine appears to just dump the heat from the heat box into the tunnel itself.

Re: '48 heater
The way it is installed at this time is the r/s (flat) muffler has 3 exhaust tubes to connect to each jug. Then it has a shroud with an inlet in the front and an exit in the back and it goes directly to the carb heat. The l/s (round) is the only one that has anything to do with the cabin heat.

Re: '48 heater
I'll check on the mouse thing. As I recall there is no y tube. The muffler on the r/s is a more flat muffler with three pipes that go all the way to the exhaust flanges. The round muffler on the l/s as I recall has a 3" opening for the heat to exit, but, I think it is reduced down to 2" to ...

'48 heater
Since I cant seem to find the info, I'll ask. What upgrades/improvements are available for the cabin heat system for a '48 170. The small scoop( if you can call it that) on the front left baffle doesn't seem to collect much airflow resulting in, yep you guessed it, little heat output. I have a round...

Re: push rod tubes
Too long for a reply but I work 7 on / off. Yep bought the tool and used it. The lifter cover adapters have alot of slack when placed over the cover. As I was getting leakage from the inboard end, I figure that was partly to blame. Also some outboard leakage. After reinstalling with a bit more rtv i...

Re: push rod tubes
Well, Another run-up today showed the #3 jug leaking a small stream from the stud/ thru-bolt at the 6 & 7 o'clock position and one tube leaking on the inboard side. I actually had 3 or 4 leaking on the inboard side but I twisted the tube a bit and 3 of them stopped leaking. May have some weeping...
