Sadly, sold 4490B

With sadness, I sold N4490B. It just made no economic sense to keep paying hangar rent and insurance while being grounded. That hangar rent was a budgert buster... The buyer, Scott Shields, will take good care of it. He lives in nearby Palm Beach County and has owned a 170B which was wrecked by Hurr...

Stearmans are great fun airplanes. When I was in college,in the early 1950's, I was in the ATL CAP squadron. We had a Stearman, a PT-19, and a Stinson L-5, all courtesy of the USAF. We could fly these neat airplanes to our heart's content just for gas & oil. I built up my hours towards a commerc...

Faster medical waivers ?

This just came on the AOPA newsletter. Could be good news for me and others- to quote the legendary Dr. Johnson-"Interesting if true..." Rudy HEART PATIENTS TO GET FASTER REISSUANCE FOR MEDICALS The Federal Air Surgeon has told AOPA that soon aviation medical examiners (AMEs) will be permi...

Truly astounding costs for a fuel selector valve. They must be selling them to NASA- makes the $600 toilet seat look like a bargain!

Cessna OE-2

In the January '06 issue of FLYING magazine, on the last page, p.100, "50 Years Ago" there's a photo of an L-19 (O-1) with what looks like a Cessna 185 empennage. The blurb states that it's an OE-2 built for the Marine Corps, has a Continental O-470-2 engine and "has a achieved a true...

Verification of Registration requirement-

The current EAA E-Hotline advises that aircraft owners have until Feb 1 '06 to verify that the registration information is current and correct. Otherwise the airplane may be denied access to the NAS (National Airspace System). Below is a link to check on your airplane. http://www.faa.gov/licenses_ce...

Russ, great IFR story. The 170 is one of the few airplanes small and economical enough to goof around the airport, do touch and go's and yet use for real transportation. ILS approaches in a 170 are FUN ! Fortunately, my altimeter is easily in the scan, which certainly makes life easier. A few years ...

My compression was good, so it was probably the valve guide. I "solved" the problem the simple but costly way. I installed 12 new Champion iridium spark plugs and haven't had a firing miss since. I don't recall the exact cost but they were expensive, the figure of $60 each comes to mind. R...

Stinson Driver, you may not need brakes when operating on a grass field with little wind, but taxiing a 170 on a taxiway in a crosswind, you DO need them. At least I do.

I'm not a huge fan of Phil Boyer/ AOPA but it's the only lobby wev'e got and I'd hate to see them bite the dust. We can never compete with the military-industrial complex Ike warned us about. Same with the airlnes. Notice the new tough bankruptcy law applies to people who mainly file for relief due ...

George, when I go IFR I always file a flight plan- will ATC give you a clearance to go up on top (or back down) with just a radio call ? Or must you file with FSS for a clearance ?

I know for a fact that the Guatemalan Air Force had at least one 170. They wrecked it and the gentleman I went to work for rebuilt it for them. In return, they gave him a treasure trove: two Ryan STM's - like the civilian STA's, with Menasco engines, but the military single-seat version, and three W...

The reason AOPA endorsed the plan to let Lockheed to operate FSS's is that it will theoretically save money and thus forstall the dreaded user fees. It probably will do neither. George is right - we're letting the camel of privatization get it's nose in the tent...
