A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum

This will be the first of two posts. I Will try to keep them both limited to the Readers Digest Version as opposed to the Michener version but, there is some technical stuff involved. I almost named this post “The best way to hide an elephant is leave it in plain sight”. This concerns what we learne...

Split cowling for Avcon installations

Ok from my previous post I couldn't add these photos. I originally modified my cowling to be installed with camlocs only and split it so the solid nose bowl is not an issue. See photos for how I did this. Airbox is not attached to cowling it is part of the engine so any vibration does not crack the ...

Air box for Avcon conversions and split cowling

Ok I'm hoping this lets me post my photos. I guess I can only post 5 and I have nine so I will post 5 here and maybe 5 more on another post. When I put my Avcon conversion on in the early 1990's. I knew the orange scat hose for the air on would be an issue. I always see them in poor condition with h...

Re: Interesting tach mode of failure

Just so everyone knows I am sort of for the electronic tachometers. I have an old school Hartzell prop rpm checker and most steam gauge tachometers are off by at least 75 rpm and many lots more that go into 150 rpm plus. I have guys wanting their props or governors adjusted and I first do a tach che...

Why Aerocet 2200's cost so much

I posted that I had a new pair of 2200 Aerocets that I could sell in the lower 48 or they would be transported to Alaska by the end of the month. I gave my contact information and almost all the inquiries were wanting to know how they could be 7000.00 more that Super Cub floats and rigging. It is re...

Re: Replacement ELT Antenna

Up here in Alaska they do not launch on a 121.5 ELT signal unless someone calls in and says an aircraft is overdue. I got this info from the Alaska Air Guard. they launch immediately on a 406 signal and the search area is half a kilometer in one sweep instead of 40 freaking square miles in multiple ...

Re: Dynamic Propeller Balancing

I balance propellers with an Aces balancer. I have had it for decades and get it certified annually. Anyway, unless their instructions have dramatically changed, the way the final balance weight is attached does not appear correct in the photo. I could be incorrect. When I balance them with that kin...

Re: landing gear/gearbox information

Guess I posted this reply in the incorrect forum. I copied and pasted it. Cheers I agree with George with how hard do you want to hit a brick wall. However these STC/mods need to be an analyzed a bit better before being incorporated. Unfortunately, I work on a lot of Cessna 180/185 aircraft...far in...

I agree with George with how hard do you want to hit a brick wall. However these STC/mods need to be an analyzed a bit better before being incorporated. Unfortunately, I work on a lot of Cessna 180/185 aircraft...far inferior to the 170 due to the ever failing trim system and the stinger tailwheel. ...

Re: Door hinges

Are they shown in the 170 IPC? I am out of state and don’t have ready access to my manuals. Also convalescing after a bad accident. They are attempting to PMA parts do we have a source? If anyone has gotten a PMA you understand what a time consuming and cumbersome process it is with little financial...

See below for what he is looking for What I’m needing in particular is a 170B with a serial number of 26996 or later, and I need to see photos of the cabin ...

Re: Spark Plug Question

I have a Mil Spec somewhere for plugs. For quite some time Champion did not make the requirements which is 5000 ohms. I am flying blind here so may be inaccurate. Champion for years said this was not true. I have heard they eventually changed the resistor to meet the specs. You can tell the differen...
