Re: The journey begins. 170B project.
Hmmmmmm. What the heck??? Anybody know what this is on the front left of my engine is?? If I didn't know better, I'd say it's some kind of simplistic prop control device. The crankshaft also has a plug in it as if for a constant speed prop!!! Was there ever a such an animal on this engine?? Maybe a...

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.
Yep. Solid axles installed. What do I look for in the structure to ensure the mod was done in order to remove the center windshield bar? And would I have to have an STC/337 for that? Also.... I'm not seeing an STC/337 for the baggage door installation. I've ordered a FAA records CD for the plane to...

Yes, the PPonk mod allows the gear box to endure higher loads than without. Yes, when a gear leg with PPonk fails - it fails BIG...

Re: Lift strut removal
The 170 never came with strut fairings.
Early 172 fairings fit but your mechanic may want approval to put them on.
If you pull the strut, take care to not lower it until it is completely out of the aircraft or you can damage the end fitting.

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
My unit, a 406 does not have an GPS input but I'm under the impression by its signal, the search would be pinpointed down to several football fields whereas a GPS signal would be down to under a decent 3 point conversion. I would have gone to a GPS unit but unfortunately in Canada they added a regu...

Who is talking about deliberately destroying logs or deception? No one. Maintenance records are NOT required to be kept BY LAW for all time. You need to keep them until the work is repeated, superseded or one year after the work is completed. https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/91.417 91.417 Mai...

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
In the aviation community, is it still a tinfoil hat or does one wear an aluminum fedora instead?

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??
You don’t need to be flying in the back country for a 406 ELT to be justified. There are plenty of airports where you can nose it in on takeoff and not be noticed/found for days or weeks. Having an antiquated piece of safety equipment that transmits on a frequency that no one listens to seems pretty...

Re: 180HP 170B vs C180
From what I understand, Air Repair does not manufacture new L-19s but rather does an incredibly extensive repair of an existing data plate. Thats how the warbird folks do it. They have a drawer full of legal data plates and 'repair' one when someone comes along with enough money. Although that is d...

Why settle for a 180hp 170 when you can have a 210hp 170?

Re: Engine upgrade, rebuild, used or 0-360
I spoke to DelAir (Chris?) a few weeks ago about their instrument panel STC and their engine STC came up.
They are still in business and fully supporting the STC.
Give them a call, they are good people.

Re: Aluminum Spot Welding
Thanks David and Ryan. I ask an unambiguous, black and white question ... and the answer is ambiguous — black and white. I scoured this website for a picture of one and came up empty-handed. It seems every C-170 YouTube video had the ashtray covered with a portable GPS so I didn’t have any lu...

FWIW Both 2481D and 2695D had black knobs and chrome tops for the ash trays.
