Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
How about the flap/aileron gap seals? I get the theory but has anyone seen any measurable improvement in either climb or cruise with them installed. I was advised they were a waste of good money. I have on good account that VG's work for STOL. However, VG's can put you on the back side of the power ...

Re: Crosswind Component
Very good guess and plausible but no. I have seen winds in excess of 75 kts with severe mechanical turbulence from the "mountain" to the southwest at Lajes. But it's an island destination, what are you going to do, man up or divert to the Atlantic Ocean? On my soapbox for a moment; the thi...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
Wow! That would stink KG. The builder I have selected has built a number of airpark homes in the area and has a long relationship with a local banker. I have met with them and been pre-approved for the mortgage. I have not met with the appraiser yet but I think a pre-build lunch would pay dividends....

Re: Crosswind Component
As the current owner of JHKeeton171's 170C (thanks again Jim), and a current C-130 instructor pilot, Bruce and George's comments are spot on! Exceeding any of the published speeds simply makes you a test pilot and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but you stick your neck out a little further with ...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
My sentiments exactly George! The 60x60 hangar looks "right sized" but it looks like I "need" a 50x14 foot door to accommodate most GA aircraft that could operate from a 2500 turf strip. A 16 ft tall door would open it up to a few of the larger nose draggers ( but that's their pr...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
You did George and I appreciate it! Thank you and everyone else that has offered their two cents. I am still interested in hearing anyone else's experiences with building on an airpark, the pitfalls particularly. This is our first attempt at new construction and I am desperately trying to not mess i...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
George, I couldn't wait. Nice pictures, but what does this mean: "Steel Buildings Barns Houses Garages and Outback Steel Building Kits steel metal buildings for sale in kit form, house cabin garage buildings for sale. all steel construction. Houses made of Mrs. Henry Wood have incessantly been ...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
Marathonrunner. I understand, I really do. Thanks. I agree that the steel shell can be built into an impressive home. I have seen some pretty cool ones. Don't forget a picture of the genuine Thomas Crapper! Sixracer. I sent her a youtube link to one of the houses on market up there. It was pretty aw...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
Marathonrunner, I believe the ventilation problem can be easily solved but how about the insurance. Was there any appreciable difference in the insurance cost by having the hangar attached vs detached? Do you mind attaching a picture of your home? Yes, I am capable of doing quite a bit of the work m...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
I do not own the lot. I own two houses in Alabama both with a mortgage. One is a rental and one is for sale. The proceeds from the sale should cover about half of my 20% construction cost. I can also borrow against my 401K to cover the difference if need be, I am hoping not.

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
Good points from all. The separate house and hangar is a valid point. Perhaps a separate ventilation and/or fire suppression system would mediate the potential fumes and insurance risk. As for your "owner", I can't help you there. The aerial pictures are accurate, there are currently...

Re: Dreaming of an Airpark Home
Thanks Sixracer. We are glad to be here. I am building on Cypress Creek Airpark (http://www.cypresscreekairpark.com/) near Cabot. I would love to live on Greer's Ferry lake or the strip on the Little Red river, it's just too far to commute for work. We looked at the hangar apartment concept to start...

Dreaming of an Airpark Home
I recently re-located to Little Rock and plan to build on a local airpark. The neighbors are fantastic, the field is well seasoned (about 20 years), the drainage is adequate and the lots have been "perk" tested for septic. I have found a local builder who is highly recommended and the mort...
