Re: CS Prop info

I have found Cessna 170,s fitted with Lycoming O-360 engines have no difficulty uplifting 250lbs over their weight . While it’s not legal ,and i am not recommending doing it , but had to under extenuating circumstances . I was full of fuel and had 3 very large passengers on board. I did ask what the...

different engines in 170,s

I have just been reading in Plane and Pilot that a 1962 cessna 175 skyhawk has been fitted with a Continental O-470R engine . However saying all that about 6 months ago a friend of mine who purchased a RV-8 from Alaska informed me he had seen in Alaska[Fairbanks] a Cessna 170b fitted with a Continen...

Re: Broken rudder return spring

It wish I had met Dick Lemmon , he was a very interesting and knowledgeable person. Loved his logic on the forum. Actually i used to look forward to his forum inputs. I have used his method of replacing the rudder springs on Two occasions . The left side broke ,replaced it and inspected the RH side ...

Re: Aero VS Auto Engine

I used to have a cleveland 351 v8 in my race car and found the rocker gear and push rods the achilles heel. especially over 6500 rpm. I have kept as trophy’s a number of shattered pushrods . So my question is “are you over revving the engine ? . The windsor V8 also had an issue with the valve train....

Re: Wanna' Help Save Boulder Airport (?)

Be warned ,when dealing with airport closures the truth is always forgotten. Some people [developers and the local authorities ] will creat a lie and urban myths and repeat it enough in all the media to the point it appears fact . Even the local authorities employees get caught up in the hyper lie a...

Re: Cracked Vertical Stab Bracket

People often think what have I done to have this component fail. I do not push on the tail etc. But what have the previous owners have done ? Nobody knows . This is why a very close 100hrly inspection should be carried out . i still do the required SIDS inspections. I have been lectured that spinnin...

Re: Avcon w/ low RPM’s

A friend recently imported a Cessna 170 from New Zealand and this guy was taken to the cleaners. No inspection of aircraft or log book verification carried out. My friend had purchased it from another doctor . Both these guys had gone to uni together over 24 years ago . So the aircraft must be good?...

Re: Polishing advice needed

Another urban myth is to use a couple of good squirts of WD40 in your water for washing your aircraft. I haven’t tied yet ,but can’t see any harm in the practise.

Re: Stall Warning Horn

While I am not endorsing using bogus parts , I had a situation where we in-ported a Piper Archer . It was wings off and placed in a shipping container . On arrival and assembly was taking place and it was noted the stall warning horn had been crushed . A new one was ordered from Piper with a 16 week...

Re: check out u tube

There is another U tube doco thats called “The $200,000 Cessna 170. ITs click bait . It’s a very crude doco on the Cessna 170 from “Aviation Base”.
I can’t recommend it unless your TV is broke and the wife will not let you out to go to the football.

Re: C170 Serial Numbers

When I am inspecting an aircraft ,I never read the logs first . It’s my belief that If you read the logs first you have an image in your mind what the aircraft is and maybe a “wow”factor has crept in. When inspecting I make written notes and then compare them to the log books . I recently had a clie...

Re: C170 Serial Numbers

In my humble opinion the Cessna factory must have had red Cool Aide in their water fountains . I have seen a Cessna 170B [1956 ?] with dual undercarriage gear boxs. It had a nose wheel at some stage . It’s a tail dragger these days and the certificate on the door post says it’s a 170b. I was telling...

Re: brake hoses

I was contacted by a ex member offering some advice on stopping these brake hoses corroding out . He told me to liberally coat the outer hoses with boat grease and then slip on some electrical plastic conduit over the fabric covered part of the hose and then clamp each end down with a worm drive hos...

Re: Polishing advice needed

i have had the same issue with my spinner. we have very mineralised water and after washing these spots appear. i have then used 1000 grit paper and slowly advanced to 1500 grit. I was told that tooth paste is good also but haven’t tried that yet. After 1500 grit rubbing all over I then use a metal ...
