Re: ADS-B uavionix updates
Anyone know why the TailBeacon (which does not include a strobe unit) is $150 more than the wingtip unit that does have a strobe light? The rest of the specs seem to all match.

Re: Why I fly
I spent my formative years at the airport in Grenada as my Dad was airport manager, chief flight instructor, chief charter pilot, head lineman and primary hangar sweeper in the late 40's and early 50's. As a toddler I apprenticed in all those disciplines as well as learning to drive (Crosley) on the...

Re: Garmin GPS (Automobile)
Just picked up a Garmin Nuvi 2595 LMT at Costco for 169.95. My wife, daughter and now myself have Garmins with life time maps and traffic. All happy with having separate auto GPS even though we also have smart phones. I guess it is just personal preference and what you are use to.

Re: Crosswind Component
Frank I owned a converted 1956 172 with the same gear conversion STC that you have, and I believe the "demonstrated x-wind component" was 0. Meaning they did not, nor were required, to demonstrate any performance numbers, just structural integrity and "no adverse effects." What l...

Re: Endorsement
Is the school owner also his flight instructor? I can't find anywhere in the FAR's or Advisory Circulars where the "flight school owner" has any say so about much of anything. If it is a FAR 141 school, the requirements of their curriculum dictate what how it has to be done and there are p...

Re: Radio / Intercom Issues
Had similar problem that turned out to be racking issue of radio unit not smoothly fitting into rack and all pins in the connectors making good contact. Check all pins in the plugs in the back of the rack and on the radio unit itself and make sure none are loose, bent, broken or corroded and that ra...

Re: Cabin/Carb Heat System
The way I understand that set up, with the carb heat in the cold position, both left and right exhaust heat muffs provide cabin heat when cabin heat knob is pulled out. When carb heat is pulled on a diverter valve is closed in the rear of the airbox and the left heat muff air is now directed to the ...

Re: High Cyl Temps
I think I remember seeing a note somewhere in the Westach paper work or on their website that the spark plug gasket style probe reads approximately 50 to 75 degrees higher than the bayonet probe due to different locations on the cylinder.

Re: Lycoming O-340 Engine
I think the cruise horsepower restriction is due to the fact the airframe it is installed on is licensed in the light sport category and is limited as to it's maximum cruise speed in level flight, or something to that effect. Full rated horsepower is still available for takeoff, climb, go-around etc.

Re: Sky-Catch Info
Yes, Mr. Traves and his wife have both passed. Don't know if any of the surviving family members would have any more information on tooling and/or parts for the SkyCatch or not. Their names are available in the obituaries and I quess it would not be too hard to track some of them down. Some people w...

Re: RUDDER STEERING SPRINGS
I also have a 1956 C-172 converted to taildragger. It had compression springs on it when the previous owner acquired it. When we were looking at it for purchase the steering arms were severely bent upwards and his comment was that he had already replaced the steerings arms six times in the previous ...

Re: 180HP conversion & Vspeeds
Isn't the C177 the Cardinal? That is a completely different airframe and wing from the 170/172 series. I would think the fixed gear Cessna Cutlass (C172 with 180hp) would have more uselful info and data.

Joe- ICOM makes a nice radio to be used as a base station. Check their website or one of their suppliers. NARCO use to have one, but that was 30 years ago. I have one and it still works, but it is at the airport and I don't have any data on it here. On a different subject. Notice you have a 172 conv...

Bolen conversion on C172
I've just recently acquired a 1956 C172 taildragger conversion done with the Bolen/Avcon STC. It was done over 15 years ago and has gone through several owners since. The logbooks are original and the proper sign offs, STC, 337's are documented, but there are no supporting documents or instructions ...
