Re: Engine roughness

Glad you found the problem Ryan and shared the solution with us.

And a four-place Taylorcraft is a very rare airplane that most people don't even know exists. I've only seen one! I believe around 20 were built, is that right?

Re: C 170 in Museum?

I also think the PCAM, like nearly all aviation museums is heavily weighted to the warbird/military side; that's what folks are interested in. I don't believe they truly understood the significance of the airplane and the importance of preserving it as it produced over 60 years ago. It was obviously...

Re: C 170 in Museum?

Thanks for the link to the current status on the Santa Rosa 170B. I'm actually saddened by what I saw. Without having seen up close and personal this airplane, I can't say for sure but the restoration seems unnecessary. This was an original, hangared 600 hour aircraft and I suspect the corrosion was...

Guys, some sad news - Bob from F & M has passed away. The recording says F & M will be closed until next week to mourn his passing.

Prayers to him and his family.

Re: retired corporate pilot

That's great George; did you let him land it? :P I was lucky to get the tailwheel thing done way back when as a student pilot (Taylorcraft). Flew most of the light tailwheel airplanes up to the Cessna 180 and about 1,200 hours in the DC-3. A little bit like learning to drive a stick shift, once lear...

Re: Parachute Flares

Here's a pamphlet from the University of Illinois on their experiments with landing flares. Click on one of the selections in the "View the book" box on the left. Gary, that was AWESOME! Thanks for posting it. I'm always interested in forgotten details of aviation history; four-course ran...

Re: Parachute Flares

Yes, the magnesium parachute flares were required even for airlines until around 1947. United lost a DC-6 to in-flight fire at Byrce Canyon because a design flaw in the fuel system allowed overflow to collect in the combustion cabin heater. The magnesium flares made the fire uncontrollable, and the ...

Another vote for ECI. Same results everyone else is reporting. I've had experience with all three; TCM, Superior and ECI. They have been by far the most trouble free.

Question about 1950s ATC

This was posted on the Airliners.net site. I think I know most of the answers but I thought I would post it here because this a a place where a lot of old codgers hangout :P I'll bet Blueldr remembers how the system worked back in 1950. Russ Farris American Aviation 15 May 1950: "The outgoing p...

Re: Hangar Bay Interiors?

Yes, I used Hangar Bay a few years ago when I replaced the carpet in the '57 172. Good quality and price, it fit well with some minor trimming. I would use them again...and they were very nice to do business with. Russ Farris

1950s General Aviation safety film

You guys should enjoy this, I don't think it's been posted. Lots of 170 and Bonanza action in color! Says 1950 but I saw a 1954 Cessna 180. The message is just as valid today as it was 60 years ago. Russ Farris

Just going to put my finger in the pie and say that in the past 30 years I worked on a many Boeings, Douglas's and Airbus, all have their weak points and strong points. seen stuff that will turn you "" "". I give Boeing thumbs up for structure, Airbus for ingenuity, and douglas ...

Re: Current and Past DC-3 Pilots ,here ?

I flew DC-3 co-pilot spraying mosquitoes in the Florida Keys in the summer of 1977. Got a job with a commuter airline in Miami in the fall flying the mighty DeHavilland Heron - FOUR Lycoming IO-540s and 19 passengers! They replaced them with DC-3s six months later, I got typed and flew as captain 14...
