Re: 1948 C170 Measurements
c17053 It's a small world! I moved to Nova Scotia last summer and live just outside of Middleton. I purchased the plane about this time last year then got word about my millitary transfer to the east coast. I knew the fabric was rough but thought I might just be able to fly it home however that turn...

1948 C170 Measurements
Could you gents help me with some measurements as I’m away from my plane and publications but trying to get setup to trailer my plane (project). 1.Width of main gear 2.Length: Main wheels to tail wheel 3.Length: Main wheels to tip of spinner (as it is sitting on the ground/trailer) I’m wondering...

Towing a 170 on main wheels
Hi Gents!
What are your thoughts or considerations for towing a 170 as if it was a trailer (wings off and tail feathers removed) using the tail spring (with an adapter) as the hitch?
Thanks Greg

Yeah the weather was an issue but so was the fabric on the wings. The plane was advertised as needing new fabric but I was hoping to be able to fly it for the summer. I have now decided to deal with it sooner rather than later. I am fortunate to be dealing with a great group of retired fellows who h...

N2218B: thanks very much for the local info. I had that route highlighted on the map (Raysnolds Pass, Hwy 89, Ennis- Big Sky, Sportsmans) but will now consider it plan A. My reason for stopping at Rexburg is to top up on fuel and the latest weather before taking on the mountain passes. Roesbary: tha...

Hi Gents! It’s been over a year since I started imposing on all of you with questions about your old classics. I’m proud to say that it’s finally led to my recent purchase of a 1948 Rag-wing 170. I’ll be the first to admit that she’s not much to look at, but following some disappointing, h...

Thanks for constructive responses. Roesbery - by way of comparison, how do you think a 145 hp C170 would have done of that 1200 ft strip with the same load? What attribute gives the 170 better visibility? Are the front seats taller and do they move farther forward? It doesn't appear as if the slope ...

I will look into the insurance aspect but was thinking I would just get liability when the time comes. After all, it’ll never happen to me! As far as cows eating the plane, that should no longer be a problem as I shipped my last animals last week. Plus, only a MAD cow would eat a plane and we donâ...

Cessna 170 versus Maule M4-145
I just learned that the early Maule M4 had a 0-300 engine with a fixwed pitch prop and wondered if any of you have had experience with this plane and would like to comment on how it compares to the Cessna 170? How about a Maule with a CS prop? I hope Maule is not a bad word around here now that I ha...

Bad Shopping Experience
I was finally able to make the 8 hour drive on Thursday to southwest MN to look at the plane that I was hoping would become my pride and joy. I knew it needed some cosmetic attention but expected it to be mechanically sound as the annual had just been done in October. I was sure disappointed when I ...

Cessna 170 Tail Wheel Checkout
Do any of you know where I can get some training time on a 170? I have no tail wheel time to date and would need a full checkout.
Thanks, Greg

Electrical Systems and Avionics
I am looking at used radios for there plane that I want to buy and wonder what is the normal voltage as some of the radios are 14 verse 28. Electrical systems have always been a bit of a mystery to me!
Thanks, Greg

Which do you prefer 170 / 170A / 170B
I am very close to buying a 170A and started wondering if it wouldn't be long before I'ld start wishing I had a 170B. So, I thought that I'ld ask the question of those who own these planes if they wish they had a different model and why? I guess I'm wondering if things like the heater or the "b...
