Thanks Carl- I appreciate your comment, that is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Glad you are having good luck with the ECIs. I have not heard anything negative about them so far. I'm going with the nickel-carbide since there will be times when the plane will have to sit for periods of a ...

Robert- Years ago, an old-time federal Fish and Wildlife pilot who flew just about every kind of amphib aircraft imaginable up here in Alaska told me the only wheel bearing grease that would last in their amphibs was Mobil Synthetic Lubricating Grease, MLITH SHC-220. The Mobil lubricants distributer...

Miles- Sorry for the delay in answering, I've been down at the old fishing hole. Thanks for the info and web site for the push rod housing tubes. They look pretty straightforward except for the RTV at the cylinder end of the tube. I wonder if that is an RTV gasket or if you have to squirt RTV out of...

Bruce- Sorry for the delay in answering, I've been down at Lake Iliamna for the last 4 days. The red salmon are in strong but the run is on the decline now. It was a good one but about a week to 10 days late. They are usually done by the 25th. Thanks for the info on John Dittlinger. I'll look him up...

Miles, Joe, and Bruce- Thanks for the info on your cylinders. The tech rep from ECI also recommended the nickel-carbide for lower oil consumption and rust resistance. With the other features the ECI has, cylinder head temp probe boss, teflon padded rocker arm shaft ends, and exhaust valve rotator, I...

In 1975 I bought a Honda Mini Trail 70 (CT-70) for $100 that has fold-down handlebars and weighs 145#. With the back seat out and the handlebars folded, it will roll right into the 170 in one piece without modification. It will haul two standard FAA 170# people at 35mph on level ground and is street...

Spiro- Thanks for supplying the p/ns for the aluminum bushings, I was just headed out to the valley to get the numbers off my plane. I forgot to look yesterday. I agree tying the whole airframe and engine mount solidly together strengthens both and even small alignment changes in the engine can caus...

Bruce- Congratulations, you are the first person in 18 years to figure out my username. Yes, I've been at Hilltop since 1988. I put Anchorage as my location because not many folks know where Peters Creek is. I see you are in Wasilla, which airport are you based at? 1715D is at Mel Wick's shop betwee...

The aluminum bushings bolt-up solid to the firewall preventing any relative movement between the engine mount and firewall, especially important on floats because there are no tires and spring gear to absorb the shock loading of rough water. Rubber bushings will deform and beat-out, letting the bolt...

Which new cylinders are the best? ECI,Superior,Continental?
I know, life is all about choices. It's time to buy the new cylinders for my O-300D overhaul and I could sure use some real-world-experience advice. Any comments on operating experiences with the three manufacturers; ECI/Titan, Superior/Millineum, and Continental/new design will be greatly appreciat...
